The Galaxy Z TriFold took a different approach to the tri-fold design when it launched last year. Instead of leaving part of the flexible display exposed, Samsung made both hinges fold inward, keeping the screen protected when the phone is closed.
Huawei Mate XT 2 adopts inward-folding design like Galaxy Z TriFold
Huawei has officially unveiled the Mate XT 2, and there’s a notable change from its first-generation tri-fold (which also holds the distinction of being the world’s first tri-fold phone). It features an inward-folding design at both hinges, closely mirroring the architecture Samsung adopted for the Galaxy Z TriFold (review).
The original Mate XT used a combination of inward and outward folds. That allowed users to keep part of the large display exposed when the phone wasn’t fully opened, but it also meant that a section of the flexible screen remained vulnerable to scratches and damage.
The Mate XT 2 takes a different route. Both outer sections fold toward the center, leaving the flexible display safely tucked inside the phone when it’s closed. Huawei has also added a separate cover display for regular smartphone use. This makes the device more practical when you don’t need the large screen.
It’s an interesting change because Samsung’s approach has always prioritized protecting the flexible display when the device is folded. Huawei’s move to a similar design suggests the industry may be settling on inward-folding hinges as the more sensible approach for tri-fold phones.
Interestingly, the Mate XT 2 is also rumored to feature a privacy display similar to the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s. Huawei could reportedly limit the feature to higher-end versions, including a model with 16GB of RAM and 2TB of storage.
Well, speaking of Samsung, the company is developing a Galaxy Z TriFold 2. It’ll seemingly feature redesigned hinges and improved structural durability. Huawei’s design change could make the next generation of Samsung’s tri-fold even more interesting.
