Targeting app releases to specific countries and regions lets you control user access across production, open testing, and closed testing tracks. By customizing your country and region targeting, you can test features and manage launches in specific regional markets before you prepare and roll out a release or set up open, closed, or internal tests.
How to use country and region targeting
You can use country and region targeting in several release scenarios:
- If your app has a production release, you can launch an open testing or closed testing release in a new country or region without expanding your production release to that country.
- If your app has an open testing release, you can launch a production release in a subset of countries or regions while continuing to run an open test in other countries or regions.
- You can run a global open test while your app is available in specific countries or regions in production.
Country and region targeting does not apply to the internal testing track. You can add users from any location to an internal test. If an internal tester is located in a country or region where your production, open test, or closed test version is unavailable, the user will still receive the internal test app.
Manage country and region targeting across tracks
Set country and region targeting for production
When you target a country or region in production, all current and future production releases will include the selected country or region.
To manage your app's production availability:
- Sign in to Play Console and select the app that you want to manage availability for.
- Go to the Production page (Test and release > Production).
- Select the Countries / regions tab.
- Click Add countries / regions or Edit countries / regions to choose the countries or regions that you want to target:
- If you add a country or region for a paid app, Google Play automatically adds new prices. You can edit local prices on the App pricing page in Play Console.
- If you sell subscriptions, make sure that you set prices for the countries or regions you add. To learn more, see Create and manage subscriptions.
- Save your changes.
Customize country and region targeting for testing tracks
In addition to production availability, you can customize country and region targeting for open and closed testing releases. These options may be unavailable if your user account does not have permission to manage releases.
Prerequisites: You can customize country targeting for testing tracks under either of the following conditions:
- Your app does not have an app bundle uploaded to production.
- Your app has an app bundle uploaded to production and at least one country or region is available in the production track.
To manage testing track availability:
- Sign in to Play Console, and select the app that you want to manage testing availability for.
- Go to the testing track you want to update:
- For open testing, go to Open testing (Test and release > Testing > Open testing) and select the Countries / regions tab.
- For closed testing, go to Closed testing (Testing > Closed testing), click Manage track next to the target track, and select the Countries / regions tab.
- Testing track availability syncs with production by default. Any changes made to country or region targeting in production or pre-registration automatically apply to your testing releases. To manage testing availability independently, click Unsync. You can sync country and region targeting again under any of the following conditions:
- Your track has no active releases.
- Your production track targets at least one country or region.
- Pre-registration has started and targets at least one country or region, excluding 'Rest of World'.
- If your track is no longer synced with production, click Edit countries / regions and select the countries or regions you want to add or remove.
- Confirm your selection.
