what do you expect as far as elegant goes? You need unique functionality... not likely able to make it pretty too

I just thought there is something I don't know about DOM and HTML4... Because the task is rather common and people should have a simple solution. Now I see there are only tricks like you proposed. Or I can move to HTML5...

Even using data attributes in html5 you would need to use same approach to name the attributes
