The Gen Z employees in your teams today, the interns, analysts, young executives… they will be leading your organization. But do you know them? Do you know what drives them? 
Do you know how they learn, grow, and what they are looking for? Gen Z isn't motivated by the paycheck alone. They want growth. Meaning. Mentorship. What’s the difference between “pending” and “impending”? By Chinua Asuzu The two adjectives “impending” and “pending” both qualify something about to happen or conclude. (“Pending” also has a prepositional sense, but here we’re only concerned with its adjectival sense.) “Impending” portends bad news: what’s about to happen is bad, evil, or harmful. If you already know that you’ll lose a case, then you may dread the “impending” court judgment. In this respect, “impending” resembles “looming,” which has an equally unhappy connotation. Thus, “impending” carries a note of dread. It suggests something menacing, threatening, or unwelcome. The word bears the weight of foreboding: phrases like “impending disaster,” “impending doom,” “impending storm,”“impending war” are its natural contextual and syntactic habitats. By contrast, “pending” is neutral: what’s about to happen or end may be good, bad, or indifferent. It signifies something awaiting decision, resolution, or completion. None of the following phrases bears a negative or even positive connotation: “pending lawsuit,” “pending transaction,” “pending appointment.” The outcome in each case may be favorable, unfavorable, neutral, or trivial. A pending court case, for example, could end in victory or defeat. Most dictionaries don’t note this vital connotational distinction. As an attorney, you should observe it—attorneys should know better than dictionaries. Don’t speak of your “impending departure” when you mean you’re about to go cruising in the Caribbean. “Impending departure” suggests you’re about to die—don’t be in a hurry, we need you here. Another point of difference between the two adjectives is that “pending,” generally but not universally, connotes something that’s already begun but yet to end, while “impending” typically encompasses something that’s yet to begin. A case is “pending” because it has been filed. A payment is “pending” because it has been initiated. The word implies delay or incompletion within a process in motion. “Impending,” on the other hand, usually refers to a future event that has not yet begun—but whose approach feels inevitable and unwelcome. An “impending” crisis has not erupted, but the signs are ominous. An “impending” deadline has not yet struck, but the pressure mounts.

The Unexpected Origin Story of Thai Sumedha: A Masterclass in Quality and Persistence I recently gave a lecture on how to use a personal brand for a business. The founder of Thai Sumedha, Mr.Sumeda Elpitiya, engaged in a friendly conversation with me, stating, "I do all those things". His remarkable journey, which began by chance, is a powerful lesson in entrepreneurial effort. The Divine Spark in Thailand In 1989, Mr. Alupitiya traveled to Thailand to buy clothes for his ready-made garment business. During his free time, he visited temples in Bangkok. At one temple, he met a Sri Lankan monk. While there, he saw a packet of Sri Lankan incense sticks from 25 years prior that was in "very poor condition (with no quality)". The monk showed him a high-quality Thai packet and stated that the difference between them was "like heaven and earth". The monk advised Mr. Alupitiya to abandon his other businesses, return to Sri Lanka, and manufacture a good-quality incense stick, affirming that with worldly effort (utsāhaya) and past merit (pera pinayi), he could progress. Launching with Quality On the very next day, after accidentally seeing a large incense stick factory in Thailand, Mr. Alupitiya decided to name his new business 'Thai Sumedha' in honor of Thailand. He started the business 36 years ago, but his commitment to quality meant his production cost was Rs. 10 per packet, far exceeding the market average of Rs. 2.50 or Rs. 3. The Test of the Market When he first presented his Rs. 13 product, Bellanwila shopkeepers rejected it, arguing that no one would buy a Rs. 13 product when Rs. 3 was already considered expensive. Undeterred, he returned to the original shop and forcibly left the packets, telling the shopkeeper, "Keep these three dozen, I don't want money, sell them if you can". After the Sinhala New Year, he found the goods were all sold, they had "gone like hot cakes" (uṇu kævum vagē giyā) and were selling for Rs. 15! This proved the value of his product and allowed Thai Sumedha to break into formal retail, starting with Cornel's Supermarket in Kollupitiya—Sri Lanka's first supermarket. Global Reach Today, Thai Sumedha products are available in all supermarkets in Sri Lanka and are exported to Canada, America, several European countries, and the Maldives. The company, which started with four workers, now supports a large number of families who earn a living contributing to the production of incense sticks. Day–1 Highlights | Leadership Development Workshop – Batch 10 Leadership at the grassroots is not only about managing programmes — it is about understanding people, working together effectively, and taking responsibility for outcomes. It was a privilege to facilitate Day–1 of the 3-Day Leadership Development Workshop for Block Project Managers (Batch–10) under the Food, Nutrition, Health & WASH (FNHW) Programme, organised by UNICEF India in collaboration with Odisha Livelihoods Mission (OLM). The first day focused on helping participants reflect on their leadership approach and strengthening collaborative practices essential for effective implementation at the block level. Key areas explored during the sessions included: - Developing self-awareness to better understand personal leadership styles and behavioural impact - Strengthening team coordination for effective programme implementation at the block level - Reinforcing the importance of accountability in public service roles - Encouraging peer learning and open experience sharing among Block Project Managers The discussions were highly engaging, with participants openly reflecting on real field challenges and sharing valuable insights from their experiences in community development and governance. It was encouraging to witness the energy, openness, and commitment of the participants toward strengthening leadership for better programme delivery and community impact. As I give career guidance assessment feedback to parents, one issue keeps coming up. Many parents still see university as the only acceptable destination for their children. That aspiration is not wrong in itself. It only makes sense if the child has the aptitude to cope with A-Level study in the right subjects. The problem starts when parental aspirations override the child’s natural abilities. Parents then prescribe subject choices that are clearly misaligned with what the child can realistically handle. The predictable outcome is failure to accumulate enough A-Level points for university entry. When that happens, two productive years are effectively lost. What is even more frustrating is that many of these students eventually take the very path they should have taken from the start. They move into polytechnic training, apprenticeships, or vocational routes after failing at A-Level. The delay adds no value. It only costs time and confidence. Good career advice is based on evidence. Career guidance assessments provide that evidence by identifying a child’s natural aptitudes. Once that information is available, parents can make informed decisions that match the child to the right route early, instead of correcting avoidable mistakes later. So many speakers in Singapore. Every week got one more “thought leader.” Every month someone rebrands from Manager to “Transformational Catalyst.” Every other LinkedIn profile: Keynote Speaker | Disruptor | Visionary | Coffee Lover. But the real question is not how many speakers. The real question is: Who will actually engage you… before you start scrolling Instagram halfway? You know the feeling. Ballroom at Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre. Lights dim. Music loud. Emcee very power. Speaker comes up. First slide: “In today’s VUCA world…” Second slide: 67 bullet points. Third slide: A quote from Steve Jobs that everyone has seen since 2008. By slide five, half the audience is replying emails. By slide eight, someone is checking property prices. By slide ten, you’re wondering why lunch is still not served. Engagement level: minus 3. We don’t lack speakers. We lack people who dare to say the uncomfortable things. Like: “How many of you here are pretending your job is stable?” “How many of you say ‘career break’ but actually you are scared?” “How many of you clap loudly at motivation talks but go back to the same life on Monday?” That one hurts a bit right? Because engagement is painful. It pokes. It calls out the fake smiles in networking sessions at Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre. It calls out the “I’m exploring opportunities” LinkedIn posts that actually mean, “Please hire me but don’t let my relatives see this.” A funny speaker entertains you. An engaging speaker exposes you. Funny is: “Eh AI coming for our jobs haha.” Engaging is: “AI is not replacing you. Someone who knows how to use AI better than you is.” Now suddenly no one laughing. Funny is: “Follow your passion.” Engaging is: “You followed your passion. Now your bank account following you back with low balance.” Too real? Exactly. Engagement is when the speaker says something you were thinking… but didn’t dare to say out loud. It’s when you laugh first… then feel attacked two seconds later. And in this age, where AI can write scripts, summarise books, and sound smoother than most humans, the only thing that cannot be automated is lived pain. Your failure. Your retrenchment. Your embarrassment at family dinner when someone asks, “So what are you doing now?” That’s engagement material. Because people don’t connect to perfection. They connect to “I also struggling.” So yes, Singapore has many speakers. But the one who engages you? Is the one who makes you laugh… then makes you uncomfortable… then makes you think on the MRT ride home: “Wah. Why he talking about me like that?” That one. That’s engagement.

We talk about “upskilling” and “future-proofing,” but let’s be real: if six in ten are worried, the system isn’t giving people enough confidence. Here’s what this means: * SkillsFuture can’t just be about courses. It must be about real mobility - from one sector to another, with employers actually recognizing skills gained. * AI is not just a disruption, it’s a filter. Some roles vanish, but the bigger risk is that mid-career workers get screened out because employers default to “hire young, cheap, digital-natives”. * Security comes from ecosystems, not slogans. Training only works if industries, unions, and government lock arms to ensure pathways into actual roles. This is not doom-and-gloom. But it is realism. 🔑 The real question is not “Are jobs safe?” but “Can Singaporeans pivot fast enough with assurance that their next role exists and pays with dignity?” I’ll keep pressing on this because the poll tells us people are uneasy. And unease, if left unaddressed, becomes distrust.
