ASPIRE 2A+ delivers compute performance equivalent to thousands of high-end laptops combined — enabling researchers to tackle problems that would otherwise take years to solve. But how does one actually make use of it? Last Thursday, we tackled exactly that at our hands-on ASPIRE 2A+ Introductory Workshop which equipping participants with active accounts, system knowledge, and the confidence to manage their workloads independently. The session delivered a comprehensive breakdown of the ASPIRE 2A+ architecture, focusing on login node configurations and storage frameworks. Participants actively engaged in essential HPC operations, including managing service unit allocations, navigating the software environment, executing file transfers, and deploying workloads via the PBS Professional job scheduler in alignment with system best practices. A big thank you to everyone who participated! We run these ASPIRE 2A+ sessions every month, so keep an eye out for the next schedule to kickstart your own HPC journey. Next-generation research demands next-generation compute power—but unlocking that potential takes more than just a login ID. ⚡ Yesterday afternoon, we hosted our hands-on ASPIRE 2A Introductory Workshop at the National University of Singapore, to give participants a clear overview of the new system setup. Experts from our Managed Services Team guided participants through an introduction to core systems and tools, including the NSCC HPC cluster, the PBS Pro scheduler, and various developer tools. They also covered basic operations such as file transfer, compiling C program, and creating MPI job script. Thank you for your active participation. Our ASPIRE 2A Workshop runs monthly—stay tuned for the next session and join us to get started on your HPC journey. Good to see interns become a regular feature in NSCC. Clearest sign that there is strong interest in HPC in Singapore. Just need a nudge in the right direction and the right mentors.
Coming into his internship at NSCC Singapore with a background in student cluster competitions, Nattapol Chanpaisit gained a deeper understanding of HPC, realising that for a national supercomputer operating at such massive scale, reliability and scalability matter just as much as raw throughput. Diving into performance monitoring and benchmarking, Nattapol acquired firsthand experience with the operational aspects of HPC. Under the mentorship of Wang Yi, Nattapol was given the freedom to explore his own ideas and the guidance to shape them into meaningful insights. By leveraging massive compute power to run large-scale experiments—and taking in valuable perspectives on emerging HPC trends from the broader team—this journey has ultimately solidified his passion for building the next generation of HPC. 💡 Swipe through the cards below to read Nattapol’s full story and his advice for future interns.
