One-off training runs and static benchmarks won't get us agents that work in the real world. A good post from Tianyu Shi on RLC 2026, continual RL, and why the community needs shared infrastructure: reproducible environments, documented decision trajectories, evaluation that holds up. Excited to see RLCommons take shape. Now open to everyone: https://rlcommons.org/ #ReinforcementLearning #ContinualLearning #OpenScience #RLCommons https://lnkd.in/giy_dKKd
Still reflecting on a wonderful experience at RLC 2026 ( https://rl-conference.cc/) in Montréal. One personal highlight was meeting Prof. Richard Sutton and taking part in conversations around continual reinforcement learning and reinforcement learning in big worlds. A theme that stayed with me is that agents designed for the real world cannot rely on a one-off training phase or on small, static benchmarks. They need to keep adapting under partial observability, shifting data, evolving objectives, and unfamiliar environments. To make progress on that problem, our community needs not only better algorithms, but also stronger shared infrastructure. That is why we are building the RLCommons community: an open, community-driven effort to support high-quality RL infrastructure, including reproducible environments, well-documented datasets and decision trajectories, and credible evaluation workflows. https://rlcommons.org/ Our goal is to make it easier to study agents that learn over time and operate in complex worlds: to understand what an agent observed, which actions it could take, how the environment changed, what feedback it received, and whether it truly adapts rather than merely overfits to a benchmark. The discussions at the Reinforcement Learning in Big Worlds and Continual Reinforcement Learning workshops reinforced how important this work is. We are excited to contribute infrastructure that helps turn these foundational questions into reproducible, comparable, and collaborative research. If you are building RL environments, datasets, benchmarks, scientific agents, or tools for continual adaptation, I would love to connect and explore how RLCommons can support the work. #ReinforcementLearning #ContinualLearning #RL #AIResearch #OpenScience #AIInfrastructure #RLCommons
