Luleå University of Technology tests future mining technology in unique underground test environment 💡 A few weeks ago, before spring had quite reached northern Sweden, we visited Mjölkuddsberget in Luleå. Inside the mountain, Luleå University of Technology is using a unique underground test environment to explore technologies that could support the future of mining — from sensors and data collection to connected systems, cybersecurity and automation. “It is unique that Luleå University of Technology has access to underground research infrastructure. This test environment enables different technical solutions to be developed and tested under realistic and challenging conditions,” says Jan N., project manager at Luleå tekniska universitet. The research is carried out within the European MINE.IO project, which aims to digitalize the mining value chain and contribute to a safer, more efficient and more sustainable industry. As part of the project, Luleå University of Technology is using a smaller test vehicle as an experimental platform: Artitrax. The vehicle is still under development and does not yet have full autonomous functionality, but it is used to test and evaluate technical solutions on a smaller scale. 𝐀𝐈𝟒𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐁𝐔𝐒 𝐚𝐭 𝐋𝐓𝐔: 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐈-𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 On 16–17 February 2026, Luleå University of Technology hosted the kick-off of the European AI4GreenBus project, bringing together 10 partners from across Europe under the lead of Lapland University of Applied Sciences Eeva Helameri, Anzelika Krastina The project focuses on AI-enabled Sustainable Business Model Innovation (AI-SBMI), combining artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, and sustainability to support the green transition. LTU contribute to the development of an AI-enabled student performance evaluation tool, which will support learning and assessment within the project’s micro-credential programme and be integrated into the Sustainable Business Metaverse Incubator. Three groups from LTU are represented in the project: - Project Management / ProcessIT: lama alkhaled (Project Manager in AI and Researcher in Machine Learning) - Entrepreneurship and Innovation: Wiebke Reim - Machine Learning: AI4Pedagogy: Marcus Liwicki, Saleha Haseeb and Hamam Mokayed This interdisciplinary setup brings together expertise in AI, business model innovation, and digital education to support the project’s objectives. “AI4GreenBUS is a great opportunity to bring together AI, sustainability, and business innovation across Europe. At LTU, we are especially excited about the interdisciplinary collaboration and its potential impact on education and industry,” says lama alkhaled, Project Manager at LTU.
