Some days as a CFO start with numbers. Cash positions to review. Transactions waiting for authorization. Financial reports that need to be understood before the day truly begins. But very quickly, the day stops being about numbers. It becomes about decisions. A conversation with management about the financial direction of the business. Guiding teams through complex financial questions. Helping stakeholders understand the financial implications behind strategic choices. In a single day, the role shifts constantly. One moment I am preparing management reports and board presentations. The next moment I am addressing tax matters, compliance issues, or governance concerns. And in between all of this, there is the most important responsibility—people. Working with the team. Mentoring finance professionals. Challenging assumptions. Helping them connect their daily work to the bigger financial picture of the organization. The interesting part is that the rewards of the role rarely come from the routine tasks themselves. Janette H. I agree that while Controllers and CFOs work in the same financial ecosystem, their roles are fundamentally different in focus and impact. A Controller is the guardian of accuracy and compliance. They ensure the books are clean, transactions reconciled, and financial integrity preserved. Without this discipline, trust in numbers collapses. A CFO, on the other hand, is the strategist. Their responsibility is not just to report numbers but to interpret them, forecast the future, and allocate resources for growth. Controllers look backward to confirm what happened. CFOs look forward to decide what should happen next. Both views are essential for strong governance and decision-making. I believe the real power comes from the partnership between the two. A CFO’s strategic insights are only as strong as the accuracy provided by the Controller. Likewise, a Controller’s work gains value when it feeds into decisions that shape the business. Companies that confuse the two roles often either undervalue strategy (by expecting the Controller to act as CFO) or compromise accuracy (by overloading the CFO with compliance tasks). Today I had the privilege of joining the Israel CFO Connect 2025 seminar in Tel Aviv - an inspiring and content-rich event that brought together finance leaders from across the ecosystem. For many years, I’ve believed that the CFO role goes far beyond financial reporting. A modern CFO must act as a strategic business partner to the CEO, the board and shareholders-responsible not only for safeguarding financial health but also for driving growth, innovation and long-term value creation. I’ve always seen process and system improvements as a critical part of the CFO’s value. 💡ROA vs. ROE: What's Really Driving Your Returns? You've heard the terms. Maybe even used them in reports. Every business leader talks about returns. But the question is: Do you know what's driving them? Return on Assets (ROA) and Return on Equity (ROE) are not just numbers. They're signals. If you misread them, you could be making decisions that drain rather than drive long-term growth. 🔍Return on Assets: How well are you using what you own? ROA tells you how efficiently your total assets (everything the business controls) are being used to generate profit. It matter when: ▶️ You've invested heavily in equipment, tech, or infrastructure. ▶️You're growing, but not seeing the profit follow ▶️Your cash flow feels squeezed despite increasing sales. 🟢 High ROA = You're squeezing more profit from each shilling of assets. Assets are being properly sweated. 🔴 Low ROA = Your investments might be underperforming or bloated. 🔍Return on Equity: How well are you rewarding shareholders? ROE zooms in on just the owner's capital - what's left after liabilities. A high ROE might feel good, but look deeper: 🔻 Is it fueled by strong profits - or excessive borrowings? 🔻Is shareholder value growing, or you are just leveraging debt? 🟡 A sky-high ROE with weak ROA? This is a 🚩. You may be over-leveraged. Why ROA vs. ROE Matters? 1️⃣ A high ROE with a falling ROA can mask real problems. You're growing on paper, but assets (an cash) aren't working hard enough. 2️⃣ Strong ROA with weak ROE could mean your business is too conservatively funded. There's potential - but no fuel for growth. 3️⃣ Cash flow is the truth-teller. Poor ROA often links to bloated inventory, sluggish receivables, or idle fixed assets - all draining liquidity. ♻️ Business Leaders: ✔️ Be aware of illusion. High ROE can hide the risks of over-leverage. ✔️ A decent ROA with poor cash flow often means working capital inefficiencies. ✔️Growth without strategy creates pressure. Pressure leads to waste. Waste erodes returns. So....... ✅ Don't just look at ROE in isolation. It's tempting, especially for investors. But combine it with ROA to get the full picture. ✅ Monitor debt levels: it fuels growth - but only if assets are delivering. ✅ Align capital investments with ROI. If your ROA isn't improving post-expansion, it's time to rethink the strategy. 📌In Summary: ✔️ ROE shows what you earn from shareholder capital. ✔️ ROA tells you how well your assets are working for you. ✔️ Together, they reveal if your model is sustainable - or just a balancing act. 🚀 Bottom Line for Business Leaders. What used to take 10 days can now be done in 48 hours. In countries where local banks and ERPs remain fragmented, intelligent automation compensates for the lack of infrastructure. Talent attrition is a systemic risk in high-growth markets. AI tools now allow us to anticipate departures and identify early warning signals. In environments where rules change fast AI-powered monitoring solutions significantly reduce exposure to fiscal and compliance risk. Numbers tell a story, but today’s CFO writes the plot. Earlier, CFOs just closed the books and reported: Sales up 10% Year over year. Now, it’s about explaining the story behind the numbers: Sales grew 10%: 5% organically, 5% from new business. Closing the books takes less time, so CFOs focus on business growth, cash management, and global trends. They spend more time understanding products, services, and operations helping finance support the business better. CFOs also lead projects beyond finance. I’ve handled solar cost-saving initiatives and helped set up a new office with ₹25 Cr CAPEX, learning project management, IT setup, and lease negotiations. Investors notice this shift. A CFO who knows the business builds trust even before sharing numbers. I’ve seen this firsthand presenting to investors, letting my MD focus on vision, the investor was impressed. Listen to companies like HUL or Infosys the CFO talks more about business than numbers. Over 25 years, the role has evolved: from number cruncher to strategic business partner and growth driver. I keep seeing the same pattern across finance transformations. The transformation budget gets approved...dashboards get built...decks are sharp...meetings multiply...everyone is busy (and exhausted!) Six to twelve months later, the organization is still operating more or less the same. Work did not change. Activity masquerades as progress, and when the numbers don't move, people go looking for friction. They usually land on Finance. Not because Finance designed the mess but because we funded it, governed it, and reported on it. Most transformation efforts don't fail because the tools were wrong or the teams weren't capable. **Transformations fail because no one asked what was supposed to STOP once the new thing started.** If nothing old is allowed to die, nothing new has the oxygen to live. You're just stacking more work on top of work that already wasn't working. Where have you seen this show up in your own organization, and what finally broke the cycle, if anything did?

If your only contribution in a meeting is data, you should not be in the room. Your job as a finance leader is to explain ⏵ what the data means. ⏵ what is driving the trend. ⏵ what actions are needed. ⏵ what decisions should be made. Business leaders are looking for insight, not just information. If you cannot connect the numbers to business impact, its not finance leadership. Its basic reporting. #CFO #Data

the cfo role today is less about reporting and more about choices on technology, data, and risk. ai agents can plan and run workflows. cloud platforms define how data moves. regulation changes by region and by week. in practice, cfos now decide: - which finance processes are safe to automate end to end - how data models are designed and who can access them - how much dependence on one cloud or vendor is acceptable - how finance teams stay technical enough to challenge models the tools are getting smarter. the responsibility is still very human. #cfo #financeleadership #ai #cio #cfotrends #aifinance

The book "Warren Buffett and the Interpretation of Financial Statements" gives us a few clues. In the book he outlines each rule, keep in mind these are not set in stone. 1. Gross profit margin of 40% or higher. This indicates that the company has a strong competitive advantage and can charge a premium price for its products or services. For example, both $KO and $AAPL carry > 40% gross margins at 58% and 43% respectivley. 2. Return on equity (ROE) of 15% or higher. This shows that the company effectively uses its shareholders' equity to generate profits. Buffett mentions ROE many times thru his shareholder letters, both $AXP and $KO earn ROE's of > 15%, with 38% and 29% respectively. 3. Persistently growing earnings per share (EPS). This indicates that the company is a good investment for the long term. $AXP have generated over 9.2% EPS growth over the past 10 years, this typifies what Buffett wants to find. 4. Low debt-to-equity ratio. Indicates the company is well-versed and is less likely to default on its debt. Look for something < 1 to start and then expand. 5. Adequate cash flow. Indicating the company has enough cash to meet its operating expenses and make debt payments. His version of "cash flows" refers to owners' earnings. 6. Strong balance sheet. The company has assets > than its liabilities. A strong balance sheet enables a company to withstand unforseen problems, ie Covid. 7. A history of dividend payments. Shows the company is profitable and committed to returning capital to shareholders. Buffett likes companies paying divvies, even though he doesnt pay them himself. 8. Management team that is honest and competent. This is a biggie for Buffett because the management team is responsible for running the company and making decisions that affect its shareholders. 9. A business that is easy to understand. If you don't understand the business, it will be impossible to analyze. Buffett is famous for his "too hard" pile. 10. A business that is not cyclical. He prefers steady, consistent earning businesses, but he will break his rules, ie. oil. 11. A business that has a moat. Another biggie for Buffett. He prefers companies that can earn great returns over long periods while fending off competition. 12. Business that is undervalued. He likes deals, and he wants to buy his stocks like his socks, on sale. 13. Business that you are comfortable owning for the long term. Remember investing is a long-term game.

CFO Masterclass: The 3-cycle rule One forecast miss is noise. Two in the same direction is a pattern. Three consecutive misses - regardless of size - is a governance failure. Not a finance problem. A governance problem. What changes at miss three: The market stops pricing the miss and starts pricing the unpredictability. That is a different, more permanent punishment. P/E compression of 15–25% is not unusual in companies where guidance has become unreliable - even when underlying earnings are solid. The question boards should be asking their CFO is not "what went wrong this quarter?" It is: "can you explain each miss in one sentence, and is that explanation different each time?" If the answers are vague or repeat - the forecast process is broken. And the board already knows it, even if they haven't said it yet.
