3\$\begingroup\$ @NautArch It says "melee attack", not "melee weapon attack". I assume the mount has some sort of natural weapon, or else the question is irrelevant. \$\endgroup\$starchild– starchild2018-11-01 23:40:49 +00:00Commented Nov 1, 2018 at 23:40

\$\begingroup\$ Excellent point :) but what about having access to a melee attack action? \$\endgroup\$NotArch– NotArch2018-11-02 00:04:10 +00:00Commented Nov 2, 2018 at 0:04

\$\begingroup\$ @Nautarch there are improvised actions, but I'm not sure if those are valid choices for attacks of opportunity. Might be grounds for several new questions. \$\endgroup\$Man_Over_Game– Man_Over_Game2018-11-02 01:32:06 +00:00Commented Nov 2, 2018 at 1:32

\$\begingroup\$ I probably wouldn't allow a horse to use an opportunity attack, but recently I let the wolves my goblins were riding make them, I figured a specific part of their training would be to do so. I think this is a situation where a lot of DM's will have slightly different rulings. \$\endgroup\$SeriousBri– SeriousBri2018-11-02 08:33:19 +00:00Commented Nov 2, 2018 at 8:33

1\$\begingroup\$ I would consider a DEX Save when the mount does something the rider does not expect. \$\endgroup\$Kieveli– Kieveli2018-11-02 13:01:51 +00:00Commented Nov 2, 2018 at 13:01

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- Make sure you include the system tag for the game system you are asking about (if appropriate and if the tag exists).
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. dnd-5e-2014), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
