Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending "Our Human Future with Agentic AI" - a conversation hosted by The Research Centre for the Institute for Political Studies (CIEPUCP) and the Digital Ethics Laboratory (UCP-LED) As a second-year law student at the Catholic University of Lisbon, this event was exactly the kind of cross-disciplinary discussion that's essential for shaping AI application today. Law isn't just about statutes - it's about anticipating how technology reshapes liability, rights, and accountability. The future legal sphere requires jurists who understand these machines work and their consequences. We're moving from simple instruction-following to AI models that makes decisions. That shift changes everything - liability, trust, and the nature of delegation. I took a few takeaways from yesterday: 1. Rooting AI ethics in contractual services alone isn't enough. We need to be more ambitious. University of Cornell Professor Frank Pasquale - our keynote speaker - noted that agreeing to an agent's terms of service isn't a contract between equals - it's closer to accepting a "feudal lord." An agent might claim to find you the best deal, but only searches partner platforms, severely limiting your autonomy. 2. Regulation is chasing a moving target. Current laws were built for static products. Agents are dynamic and interactive. While we're not at total replacement yet - technologies are still being developed - policy measures must anticipate future innovation. How does this link to my other work? Last week, I had the privilege of attending Universidade Católica Portuguesa's two-day symposium "Governing Agentic AI" - an event bringing together legal scholars, technologists, and ethicists to discuss one of the most urgent questions of our time: How do we govern AI systems that act autonomously? Agentic AI offers enormous potential through its autonomous decision-making, but also raises serious governance challenges: accountability, bias, sustainability, and socio‑economic impact. As a second‑year law student, the event was invaluable. It deepened my understanding of how legal frameworks, ethical principles, and technical design must evolve together - not separately. Neutrality in translation sounds simple, but it is one of the hardest (and most fundamental) things to get right, for both humans and machines. Take the Cold War. In 1956, when Khrushchev said "My vas pokhoronim," a human translator chose the aggressive "We will bury you" instead of the intended "We will outlast you." What was originally an ideologically backed statement became a threat to the Western Bloc, fueling decades of nuclear panic and mutual suspicion. Now let’s take a look at AI. The Knowledge Centre on Translation and Interpretation (KCTI) found that if you feed a gender-neutral Turkish sentence like "O bir doktor ve o bir hemşire" into Google Translate, it will confidently return "He is a doctor, and she is a nurse." AI didn't invent that bias; it learned it from us. Preconceived inclinations come from fatigue, culture, and agenda. AI isn’t inherently prejudiced - but it’s automating our hidden biases at scale.
