In 2008, it was the only place I could find the specialized knowledge I needed to do my job. At that point in time, I had no idea that nearly two decades later, I’d be in Warsaw with Mariangela Marseglia, VP of Amazon European Stores, celebrating five years of Amazon.pl. In this episode of Amazon Stage, we explored how AI is becoming a "superpower" for both customers and businesses. While my own focus involves Computer Vision and Vision Language Models, the underlying goal is exactly what Mariangela is driving in retail: reducing the "comprehension tax" for the customer. Whether it’s an AI assistant like Rufus answering natural questions or tools that help small businesses scale, we are moving to a world where convenience isn't just a differentiator—it is the baseline. Maciek Tegi udostępnił(a) toAmazon.pl just turned 5 🎉 To celebrate, we created a custom “Unboxing Amazon.pl” zone right next to the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw — imagine literally walking inside an Amazon package. During the event, I had the chance to record a special episode of Amazon Stage with Mariangela Marseglia, Vice President of Amazon European Stores. We talked about how customer expectations keep evolving, how technology shapes better shopping experiences, and why innovation in retail always starts with understanding what customers actually need. Mariangela’s perspective on building for European customers was truly eye-opening. I also had the opportunity to represent Amazon Development Center Poland during an internal Amazon All-Team Meeting, sharing the story of how our teams in Poland went from building early foundations of text-to-speech technology at Amazon to developing GenAI-powered solutions behind Amazon devices today. What really struck me was how naturally the engineering story fit into the broader celebration. It wasn’t a side note or an afterthought — it was treated as an integral part of how Amazon.pl got to where it is today. For me and our team, that means a lot. It’s a reminder that the technology we build every day in Poland powers experiences for millions of customers across Europe and beyond. Maciek Tegi opublikował(a) toIn 2019, Jacek Dukaj released his book “Po piśmie” — which translates directly as “After Writing,” though perhaps a more fitting title would be “Beyond Writing.” In the book (as well as in the Alexa Stage podcast we recorded some time ago), Dukaj argues that humanity is entering a post-literate era, where traditional writing is being replaced by image-, sound-, and experience-based communication. When I first read Dukaj’s book, I didn’t really buy into his thesis. I looked at data showing that while the average time we spend reading is indeed going down, audiobook listening has increased substantially — effectively compensating for that decline. I also pointed to companies like Amazon that use written essays to drive consensus and propose future roadmaps. About a week ago, Dave Clark — Amazon’s former SVP and CEO of Worldwide Consumer — published a post announcing that in the company he now leads, they will no longer use writing to gain alignment on new products. Instead, they will go prototype-first. “I can build a prototype faster than I can get alignment on a document. I can learn more from one user touching something real than from ten stakeholders debating something theoretical.” This made an impression on me — for two reasons. Firstly, over the last 13 years, I have observed a gradual decline in writing and reading ability. And when I say decline, I mean it literally: the ability to quickly absorb a complex narrative, digest it, and offer overarching, high-level guidance. More than once, I questioned whether the documents I wrote were really worth it. Whether the value of the alignment they produced justified the cost and time invested in writing them. Secondly, if a picture can say a thousand words, then a prototype can tell an entire story. Especially an interactive prototype — something you can touch, experience, and play with. It has a way of capturing the imagination, reducing the comprehension tax, and sparking more productive and fruitful discussions. And now, with the dawn of AI tools that let us build realistic prototypes in hours instead of weeks, this approach feels more attainable than ever before. Yet there’s one thing a narrative does that a prototype cannot: it reveals the author’s thought process. It lets the audience understand what trade-offs or challenges the author faced. Without that, reviewers can’t easily offer that one golden comment — the one that, at the right moment, can mean the difference between building an amazing product or letting a good idea vanish into the abyss of unfunded concepts. Perhaps it’s time for the six-pager to evolve into a “proto-pager.” A hybrid approach that combines an interactive prototype with a short, one- or two-page memo explaining the key ideas and reasoning behind it. Maciek Tegi udostępnił(a) toI like complexity. For reasons I can’t fully explain, I find myself drawn to it. I just finished reading Book 5 of the Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson, and it was incredible—and deeply complex. If you enjoy fantasy, I highly recommend it. The intricate layers of the story, from its sprawling world-building to the moral dilemmas of its characters, kept me captivated. As I turned the final page—awestruck by the ending—two thoughts struck me: First, despite the rapid progress of AI, I’m willing to predict we’re still decades away from AI being able to create a story on the level of Game of Thrones or The Stormlight Archive. The intricate story arcs, layered characters, unexpected plot twists, and rich underlying mythologies demand a level of creativity and nuance that today’s models simply aren’t built to deliver. Second, if you’re a native English speaker, have you ever considered what an incredible privilege that is? I’ve spent decades learning English, yet I still don’t have the linguistic intuition that native speakers naturally acquire while growing up. The neural pathways that form during childhood give you an advantage I’ll never fully replicate—though I hope that through reading and writing, I’ll get closer over time. For now, I’ll simply enjoy the process. Maciek Tegi udostępnił(a) toSupercompensation is a theory in sports science that roughly states that overreaching (completing a very intense training period), followed by a recovery period, leads to overall better performance gains. It sometimes happens that runners who compete individually and then participate in a relay achieve better performance in the relay than individually. Some attribute this to the pressure one feels when contributing to a team effort, but many athletes actually credit supercompensation for the improvement. Sports are such a fascinating field because they provide quick, measurable metrics of performance, offering a tangible sense of growth or progress. I often wonder whether a similar effect occurs in personal, non-athletic growth. I’m not sure whether we can extrapolate supercompensation and apply it to a more complex system—the brain. However, we know that intense mental effort triggers neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to adapt and reorganize. Proper rest allows those neural connections to strengthen, potentially making previously complex tasks feel easier. Think about it—especially when working in a broader company environment, you likely experience crunch times: periods when you and your team stretch yourselves to the limit. If you properly rest after such a period and then tackle a task you previously considered very complex, might that task now feel easier? I’ve noticed that when I am completely depleted and take a proper vacation where I truly disconnect, my capacity for spontaneous creative thinking spikes dramatically. To really evaluate whether this is mental supercompensation, you’d need a way to measure the quality of those ideas. One way or another—rest is undeniably good for both you and me :) Make sure to apply it after overreaching!

What I didn’t expect was that, since then, I’d personally use the product Honorata helped create to detect abnormal auscultation sounds, which a doctor later diagnosed as pneumonia in my teenage son (who is now healthy and well). I started exploring StethoMe while preparing for our interview, but just couple weeks later, I used it on a real patient: my son. He wasn’t running a high fever or showing any other symptoms that would typically prompt a doctor’s visit, but thanks to StethoMe, we caught the issue early and got him the right treatment in time. This experience has convinced me that smart medical devices are the future. They’ll become an essential part of our home health kits, improving both our well-being and our quality of life. This week, my face was on the Nasdaq Tower in Times Square with the words “CMO, Amazon Devices & Services.” I definitely did not see that coming. When I sent that email in 2015, I wasn’t thinking about where I’d be in 11 years. I wasn’t mapping out some perfect career plan. I was trying to make one move. I knew something needed to change, so I wrote to Jamie Siminoff, the founder of a small company called Ring, and asked for a job. He wrote back. A few weeks later, he hired me. What came next was a decade of work, a lot of learning, a lot of unexpected turns, and more opportunities than I could have imagined when I hit send that morning. So seeing this in Times Square this week felt a little surreal. Not because being on a billboard was ever the goal. Because 11 years ago, I had no idea where one small move could lead. Very grateful to be included in the American Heart Association and Rokt’s Leaders with Heart takeover for World Heart Day — and for the reminder to keep making the next move.

I was hired to launch Amazon Key in Europe, enabling Delivery Associates to gain standardized, verified, and time-bound access in a self-serve way, cutting the time wasted waiting to get in and reducing access-related delivery defects. In 5 years, we built a large footprint from scratch, something Delivery Associates truly love, and I could not be more proud of the journey. To build this, we invented new products, operated across multiple channels and GTM models (B2B, B2C, SaaS), and partnered closely with Amazon Logistics. Here are some of the highlights: - Launched Ring Intercom, an easy upgrade to your existing intercom that lets you see and talk to whoever is buzzing, even when you are not at home. It is now one of the top sellers in Europe. - Launched the "Works with Amazon Key" program, an API integration that lets existing intercoms work with Amazon Key, and signed a deal with a European intercom leader, expanding the footprint for Amazon drivers. - Expanded Amazon Key beyond delivery, opening access not just to drivers but to a wider audience, including residents and service providers. - Embraced AI early, which reshaped how we operate day to day. It improved productivity and drastically accelerated our time to ship new products. Thank you to Kaushik Mani and Dave Ward for their guidance, to the many Amazonians I've learned from along the way and, above all, to the team, whose hard work made this possible. As with the previous editions the conference topics hit exactly what's on my mind every day. This is yet another time I brought my team along — because shared experiences outside the daily work context build a common language that makes it easier for us to talk about the hard stuff and understand each other faster. This year we talked about transformation as something more than a one-off project: ⚡ Technological acceleration ⚖️ Decisions made under pressure 🎯 Leaders' accountability 🧠 The psychological cost of change 🛡️ Organizational resilience ♻️ Building organizations capable of continuous adaptation A few thoughts stayed with me in particular: 💥 Creative destruction — sometimes you need to unravel everything and start over 🏗️ Scaffolding matters — building structures that can be moved and adapted is the key to support teams 🧠 Psychological cost of change — it was interesting to see how we can calculate this one and how rarely we talk about it Working at Amazon, I see this every day — a company that never stops changing, challenging the status quo, and rebuilding constantly. The breath sounds may be stored as units for unit selection or may be generated during parametric synthesis. The acoustic features of the breath sounds and duration between breaths may depend upon the punctuation of text, the linguistic distance between breaths, the breaks between intonational phrases, the linguistic context of the breaths, and other factors.
