Upon approval by the IMF Executive Board, Pakistan will have access to USD 1.0 billion under EFF and about USD 210 million under RSF. Over the last three weeks, the government has shifted to absorbing the increase through fiscal adjustments to reduce the burden on consumers. This type of subsidy and transfer works only temporarily, and then eventually the reality of global market fuel prices hits the economy. Dr. Ali Salman shared thisIt is difficult to identify a singular, overarching theme or themes in Qur’an without the risk of reductionism. I personally take it as a bundle of some key messages, with several bundles which we find throughout the text- indeed this reminder or tazkirah- is the characteristic quality of the divine text. While the bundle of messages remains same throughout the text, the context changes quickly, making each bundle both unique from and like each other. This bundle of messages, in my opinion, can be classified into major themes with an internal coherence. Check out my attempt of a thematic introduction to the Quran, based on a reading of Surah Al-Baqarah.

Dr. Ali Salman liked thisLast week, Father Sirico and I had the honor of greeting Pope Leo XIV and providing him a briefing on Acton’s efforts in Rome, the U.S., and around the world. As the first American pope begins his pontificate, it is an exciting moment not only for the Church, but for those committed to the questions of human dignity, freedom, vocation, and human flourishing. After more than thirty-five years of Acton’s work, including over two decades by our Rome office, I find myself looking ahead with renewed optimism. There is a real opportunity to deepen leadership formation, engage new audiences, and continue bringing these ideas into the heart of conversations shaping the future. We were grateful to provide him with a copy of both "Legacy of Liberty" and "The American Experiment" as a small sample of Acton’s work, and look forward to what the future holds for the Church and for Acton.

Dr. Ali Salman liked thisDr. Ali Salman liked thisI appreciate the initiative of the National Citizen Party - NCP Shadow Budget Committee to inform the upcoming first budget of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-BNP govt with evidence & crowd-sourced citizen feedback. I attended the session on "Education, the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and Employment" and highlighted several critical areas regarding qualitative reforms and the budgetary framework: 1. A "Big Push" in the First Year: To achieve the target of 10 million jobs by 2030, the first year's education budget must receive a genuine "Big Push" — an allocation between 3% to 5% of GDP for the first time. 2. Focus Inside the Classroom, Not on Mega-Projects: Alongside increased allocations, BNP must guarantee responsible utilization. If we truly dream of a $1 trillion economy by 2034, we must abandon the allure of concrete mega-projects and flashy political manifesto optics. New allocations for education must focus directly on the quality of learning inside the classroom. 3. Tackle the 'Reading Crisis' First: Dreaming of millions of AI trained / ICT graduates without addressing the foundational 'Reading Crisis' in primary schools is detrimental. Instead of lofty election promises like free shoes, bags, and school uniforms, a structured Remedial Learning program must be funded to rapidly lift Bangla reading proficiency in primary grades from 51% back to 75%. 4. Transform Madrasah Education: The faith-based education sector should no longer be treated merely as a "social safety net" or a low-cost alternative. Increased public investment must modernize madrasahs so that their degrees genuinely become an "Education of Choice" for students. 5. Rationalize Higher Education: We must significantly scale up allocations for the pre-university sector while systematically curbing the unplanned, uncontrolled expansion of the higher education sector. 6. Introduce Fiscal Innovations: In this climate of macroeconomic stagnation and global uncertainty, sustained funding requires innovative financial engineering such as an "Education Cess" to generate new revenue 7. Ensure an accountable governance/implementation framework: Adopt ROI criteria and learning-focused KPIs for newly funded project monitoring and impact tracking. Create necessary institutional provisions including an "Equitable Education Fund" modeled after data-driven systems. Use this to target resources to specific regions and social groups, eradicating learning poverty while blocking corruption and systemic waste. It's my hope that #BNP and all mainstream political parties actively engage in similar consultation initiatives with subject-matter experts. Looking ahead to the upcoming budget on 11 June 2026, policymakers must move beyond empty campaign rhetoric and commit to a sustainable education budget by adopting evidence-based, practical, and accountable proposals.
