𝗣𝗿𝗲-𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻. At 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, we believe the most important work on a CFS project happens long before the first steel coil reaches the roll former. For this custom home project, our team focused heavily on early-stage coordination. By aligning our CFS engineering with the architectural layout and MEP requirements from the beginning, we were able to identify and resolve potential clashes within the digital model — before they became on-site issues. 𝗟𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 In 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗱-𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹 and light-gauge systems, the most optimized structures are rarely the ones using the 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀. They are the systems where 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆. From roof diaphragm to foundation, every vertical and lateral load should have a 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵. Because when 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘆 becomes vague, the structure starts compensating in expensive ways. That usually appears as: • 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 • 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱 • 𝗨𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 • 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱-𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 • 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 • 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲 The issue is often 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵. It is 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺. A missed collector line, interrupted shear transfer, or poor stud alignment can silently increase tonnage far beyond what the project actually requires. This is where 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 separates itself from merely 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝘀: 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲? 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝘀: 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲? The moment load paths become intentional, the entire system improves: • 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗲𝗿 • 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘆 • 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 • 𝗟𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱 • 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Some of the biggest optimization wins in CFS design do 𝗻𝗼𝘁 come from changing section sizes. They come from improving 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘆 That is the hidden difference between a structure that simply works — and one that 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆. Most clients ask one question: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁? But very few ask the questions that actually define performance. If you’re hiring a structural engineer, here are the questions that truly matter: Are you designing based on optimized utilization ratios or overly conservative assumptions? ↬ What is the governing load case in this project? ↬ Is the system strength-controlled or deflection-controlled? ↬ How will this structural choice impact the foundation cost? ↬ Have you evaluated multiple structural systems, or just one? ↬ What is the material utilization percentage in primary members? ↬ How are lateral loads being resisted — frames, shear walls, bracing, or diaphragm action? ↬ Is this design optimized for constructability, or only for calculations? Because a good structural design is not just about safety. It is about being: • Code-compliant • Material-efficient • Constructible • Cost-aware • Performance-driven 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘧𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯 — 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘱𝘵𝘩 𝘰𝘧 𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘦𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘵. 𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗚𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁. 𝗜𝗻 𝗖𝗙𝗦, 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗔𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗲. A common reaction in Cold-Formed Steel design is simple: 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆? 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀. But in many cases, that decision solves the symptom — not the real structural behavior. The bigger question is: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝘂𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝘀? In thin-walled members, 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 can reduce the usable flange or web long before the full geometric section is mobilized. That means 𝗮 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝗴𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲. Sometimes, the real gain comes from 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗴𝗲𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝘆 — 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹. A smarter lip return, improved stiffener placement, or more stable flange proportion can preserve a larger 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗱𝘁𝗵, allowing the section to perform better without unnecessary tonnage increase. This is why experienced CFS engineers evaluate: ↠ 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘀𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 ↠ 𝗪𝗲𝗯 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗵 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝘀 ↠ 𝗟𝗶𝗽 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 ↠ 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 ↠ 𝗕𝘂𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴-𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗴𝗲𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗲. The efficiency logic is simple: 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁. 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲. And in many optimized CFS systems, geometry wins. The best design decisions happen when we stop asking: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗲? and start asking: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲? 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁, 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺. At 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, better section decisions start with 𝗯𝘂𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿 — 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. What do you usually optimize first in CFS members: gauge or geometry? #ColdFormedSteel #LightGaugeSteel #StructuralEngineering #CFSDesign #LocalBuckling #SteltechSolutions

𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗻 — 𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗢𝗻𝗲? When planning a structural layout, one question should come first: 𝗗𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗻? Or are we increasing tonnage without realizing it? 𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝘀𝗸: ↠ What is the structural penalty of extending this span by 3–4 meters? ↠ How will this affect deflection limits under service loads? ↠ Will deeper rafters increase lateral drift demand? ↠ What happens to base reactions and foundation sizing? ↠ Are we optimizing for architecture — or for structural efficiency? 𝗔 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿: ↠Higher bending moments ↠Higher section modulus requirements ↠Heavier connections ↠Larger footings ↠Increased fabrication cost And sometimes — introducing a 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗻 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 reduces total project cost more than upgrading every primary member. In 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁-𝗴𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀, spacing strategy often matters more than thickness selection. Span optimization is not about achieving maximum openness. It’s about 𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁— without overburdening the system. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘀 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 — 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿. At 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵, span planning starts with performance modeling — not assumptions. #StructuralEngineering #SpanDesign #SteelStructures #ColdFormedSteel #LightGaugeSteel #SteltechSolutions
