Digital Rights Foundation reposted this
Today in FIR No. 370/25, the court has handed down a decisive verdict against the perpetrator who brutally killed Sana Yousaf, a young, emerging girl targeted simply for saying "no." The Islamabad-West Court has ordered strict, concurrent punishments under the PPC: - Section 392 PPC (Robbery): 10 years of rigorous imprisonment + Rs. 2,00,000 fine. - Section 499 PPC (Defamation): 10 years of rigorous imprisonment + Rs. 2,00,000 fine. - Section 302 (b) PPC: Sentenced to death as Tazir + 2,000,000/- fine. But the violence didn't stop in the physical world. Following her murder, a horrifying wave of viral misogyny and online harassment targeted Sana even after her death. Our research team at the Digital Rights Foundation tracked this trend to expose how brutal acts are weaponized and celebrated in unregulated online spaces (https://lnkd.in/dJAVt-Hq). As I tend to always re-iterate, physical violence and digital misogyny do not exist in vacuums, they are deeply interconnected. #GenderBasedViolence #OnlineMisogyny #TechSafety

How do platforms amplify gendered disinformation during conflict, and who pays the price? Join 7amleh - The Arab Center for the Advancement of Social Media, SMEX, and Digital Rights Foundation on 20 May at 11AM PKT for a roundtable exploring how misogynistic narratives are weaponised online to undermine women’s political participation and incite offline harm during times of conflict. Through a cross-regional lens, the speakers will also examine key policy gaps - algorithmic bias, weak localisation, and inadequate content moderation frameworks - to explore opportunities to build collective resistance. 👩🏻💻 Register to attend here: https://lnkd.in/dqeZqD_U

⚠️ SCAM ALERT! At the Digital Security Helpline, we’ve been receiving reports of fraudsters sending SMS messages impersonating PSCA and traffic police, directing recipients to replicas of government payment portals. Once on the site, victims are prompted to enter their CNIC, vehicle details, and banking information, or complete an OTP "verification" that hands scammers direct access to their accounts. Swipe through to understand how the scam works, how to stay safe, and the four immediate steps to take if you've already clicked the link. If you or someone you know is facing cyber harassment or digital security attacks, call our Helpline at 0800-39393 (Mon-Fri; 9am-5pm). We’re free, confidential, and always here to help.

NEW REPORT: Between May 2024 and December 2025, DRF's Digital Security Helpline handled 5,041 cases. Complainants overwhelmingly reported cases of hacking, image-based abuse, blackmail, sextortion, and online threats. This is the reality of being a woman, a journalist, a minority, or an activist online in Pakistan. 92% of the people who reached out to us reported reduced risk after support. But barriers such as cost, usability, and platform silence mean too many never reach out to us at all. Swipe to see what the data shows, and read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/dYv9WVCu
