Nichel Gaba, CFA, Founder and CEO of PDAX, on the Philippines' unexpected advantage in blockchain finance: "The Philippines has a unique advantage: blockchain wallets are already mainstream. We're not starting from scratch. The infrastructure to deliver tokenized assets to millions of Filipinos already exists in their pockets. Our focus now is to connect that infrastructure to real, regulated financial products." This infrastructure-first reality is what makes the Philippines different. Today, around 14% of Filipinos own digital assets, outpacing traditional investment participation. The path wasn't planned, it was organic. Mobile wallets like GCash and Maya surged during COVID-19, growing from 20 million to over 94 million users. By 2025, mobile wallet penetration had surpassed traditional bank account ownership. When the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas established formal guidelines for virtual currency exchanges as early as 2017, platforms such as PDAX laid the foundation for Filipinos to access digital assets through regulated channels. And while mobile wallet adoption exploded, they integrated blockchain wallets, enabling users to explore digital assets within apps they already trusted. When the Bureau of the Treasury launched tokenised government bonds, PDAX's infrastructure became the bridge, delivering regulated securities through rails already embedded in daily life. 🍙 At Onigiri, we co-authored Project Bayani with PDAX to document how regulatory-compliant blockchain infrastructure can accelerate financial inclusion at scale.
