Providing certainty through uncertain times. Our 10-year Electricity Asset Management Plan provides the roadmap for how we provide value to our customers by connecting them to a future-ready, efficient network. While data shows the pace of electrification is slower than predicted (driven by economic pressures, policy change and technological maturity) we know it's still a critical part of the energy transition, requiring well-timed investment informed by a good understanding of our customers' future plans and preferences. To deliver that we'll continue to build and maintain our network, while increasingly using innovative non-network solutions such as flexiblity and battery storage so customers benefit from an efficient network while minimising cost. While we'll review and adjust the plan in response to what's happening locally and globally, our goal will remain the same; to connect Kiwi to abundant, affordable and secure energy so Aotearoa can thrive. https://lnkd.in/emzfpPmJ Jason Franklin Chris Taylor Karen Frew Don Elers Stuart Dickson Jemma Gerring Ryno Verster

  • Great to host the Taranaki Women in Leadership Series at our Ngāmotu office last week. It was fantastic to see such a strong turnout and to hear thoughtful, real conversations about leadership from Petra M. Wetzel and Cathy Clennett. As Jemma Gerring (Powerco's General Manager Corporate Services and Company Secretary) shared on the day, leadership journeys aren't always straightforward and creating space to hear real experiences and different perspectives is incredibly valuable. At Powerco, we're part of the communities we serve and we're proud to support initiatives like this that bring people together, strengthen communities and support the growth of wāhine leaders across our network. A big thank you to the Taranaki Women in Leadership committee, Global Women team and everyone who joined us. Jason Franklin Chris Taylor Don Elers Karen Frew Stuart Dickson Ryno Verster

  • Aotearoa New Zealand’s energy future is not going to build itself.⚒️ We’re right behind the Re-Energise 26 plan. This important kaupapa aims to collaborate and invest in the people who build, maintain and operate the energy infrastructure that keeps Kiwi connected. Our GM Electricity Karen Frew was part of this week’s launch event as one of our best advocates for how meaningful a career in energy can be. Here’s some of our mahi: 👏 Establishing entry-level roles such as trainee controllers, design cadets and junior project managers so they can learn on the job from experienced team members. 👏 Investing in our graduate programme and doubling our intake. 👏 Creating a diverse and inclusive workplace where people can thrive. Jason Franklin Chris Taylor Don Elers Stuart Dickson Jemma Gerring Ryno Verster

We are proud to have researched, developed, and published Re-Energise 26 through close collaboration with Energy Resources Aotearoa. Re-Energise 26 brings together evidence, insight, and practical experience from across the electricity and energy sector to highlight a simple truth: New Zealand’s energy future will be built by people. We must invest in the workforce with the same seriousness we apply to infrastructure, technology, and markets if we want an energy system that can support economic growth, enable emissions reduction, and remain resilient in the face of change. The full report, executive summary document, and draft Industry Skills Action Plan are now available on our website at: https://lnkd.in/gijYRFg7 #EnergySecurity #InvestInPeople #WorkforceTrends #EnergyFutures #RE26

We’re incredibly proud to celebrate Karen Frew, our GM Electricity, who has been awarded a Fellowship by Engineering New Zealand Te Ao Rangahau. Karen's leadership helps us deliver electricity safely and reliably to more than a million customers and this recognition highlights the impact she’s had across the business and the sector.  In her own words: “There’s so much work to do as demand for electricity grows, and we need a diverse range of people and perspectives to help solve those challenges. “I’d encourage young people, especially females, to get involved in STEM and consider a career in engineering. It's a rewarding career with so many opportunities to use your skills to solve problems for our communities and contribute to the economic growth of New Zealand.”  Congratulations Karen! • On it! 🫡 We see huge potential for biomethane in Aotearoa, and we have projects underway in Manawatū, Hawke’s Bay and Taranaki to investigate making it. Our target is to have a plant injecting into our network as early as 2027. Cross-sector collaboration, and securing long-term supply of enough organic material to produce it at scale are the key challenges. This is GasNZ strategy is a big step towards unlocking the potential for biomethane on both counts. Jason Franklin Don Elers Stuart Dickson Chris Taylor Karen Frew Jemma Gerring Ryno Verster

Biomethane could meet half of New Zealand’s natural gas demand by 2050, according to our newly released biomethane strategy and action plan. Produced by breaking down organic waste and other organic materials, biomethane can be a core part of our renewable energy supply by 2035, chief executive Jeffrey Clarke says. The Biomethane Strategy and Action Plan presented to the government at the request of the Minister of Energy and the Minister for the Environment, sets out a viable pathway for getting there. (Read more: https://lnkd.in/enN5VQfF) You can view the strategy and action plan here: https://lnkd.in/euZYq_p7

  • It all starts with a great story. 📽️ We’re ambitious to connect more Kiwi than ever before, through offering value, service and energy solutions that exceed expectations. But our research told us that many of our existing customers don’t understand who we are or what we do. That’s why we recently launched a campaign for the over one million Kiwi we serve, showing the dedicated mahi that goes into delivering the reliable electricity and gas that makes their everyday lives possible.  A huge thank you to the Powerco team members and customers who are part of it, and to Chemistry who helped us bring this to life. We’re really proud of our story – have a watch! 🍿 Jason Franklin Chris Taylor Stuart Dickson Karen Frew Jemma Gerring Don Elers Ryno Verster

  • New research from Electricity Networks Aotearoa, developed with all 29 electricity distribution businesses and DETA Consulting, estimates around 609 additional public EV chargers could be needed nationwide by 2030 to meet demand on the busiest travel days. At Powerco, we’re already supporting EV charging on our network through projects with Kwetta, including installations in Ngātea and New Plymouth. These support fast charging while managing the electricity network, allowing more EV charging infrastructure to be installed without major grid upgrades. Read more in the links below: 🔌 The study findings: https://lnkd.in/eQvvjF4S 🔌 Our partnership with Kwetta (formerly Red Phase Technologies): https://lnkd.in/ehvKf2dX 🔌 Ngātea EV charging site: https://lnkd.in/gp7su6BP 🔌 New Plymouth EV charging site: https://lnkd.in/ge5-Ebrn #EVCharging #SustainableTransport #Powerco_NZ Jason Franklin Karen Frew Jemma Gerring Stuart Dickson Don Elers Chris Taylor Ryno Verster

How many public EV journey chargers does Aotearoa need by 2030 to support road trips? We set out to answer that question — and to understand where new charging will be needed most. Here’s what we found: 🔌Around 609 additional 50 kW journey chargers are needed nationwide to meet forecast demand by 2030. 🔌This includes 443 in the North Island and 166 in the South Island. 🔌If higher-powered chargers (like 100–300 kW) are installed — which is increasingly common — fewer physical units would be needed to meet demand. 🔌Many major routes are already well served (think Wellington ⇄ Auckland and Blenheim ⇄ Dunedin). 🔌But some travel routes will need significantly more charging — and these are where investment should be prioritised. 🔌Some locations across the country will be more expensive to install chargers, and targeted government support may help enable rollout. These locations include Springs Junction, Arthur's Pass, Tarras, Fairlie/Geraldine, Mt Cook, Martinborough, Kaikohe and Te Haroto. The priority should be targeted investment in specific locations. We also identified indicative connection costs and available network capacity — helping ensure charging infrastructure is built where it can be delivered efficiently, while also helping lines companies prepare for growing demand. The modelling was completed by DETA Consulting, with all 29 lines companies providing local network data and connection costs. Check out the national findings here: https://lnkd.in/eQvvjF4S

  • With only one power line (feeder) supplying the remote Wairarapa community of Castlepoint, there's no way for us to reroute electricty another way when the power is cut. So when that only feeder is taken out, like it was in the mid-February storm, the isolated nature and difficult forestry block terrain in the area has meant, at times, lengthy delays in restoring supply for Castlepoint homes and businesses. To help build resilience for emergency events like storm restoration, we installed a community emergency generator near the entrance to Castlepoint.  And that emergency generator, which came online last year, is already proving its worth - powering the community for almost three days following the mid-February storm until crews could gain access and repair damage to the main power line. It's also being used during planned outages for maintaining the main line. This generation enables lifeline supply for the likes of wifi, phone charging, fridges, freezers and food preparation to continue for the community when they need it most. Castlepoint Residents and Ratepayers Association Chair, Chris Garland, says the emergency generator is boosting the local community's resilience. • ⭐THANK YOU!⭐ 👍🏼To our electrical contracting crews, tree and traffic specialists who worked tirelessly to get customers' power reconnected following the storm that hit our lower North Island network - Whanganui-Rangitīkei, Manawatū and Wairarapa in particular - late on Sunday 15 February. Damage to the Powerco network was significant and repairs lengthy, with the main cause of outages being trees down on lines, many through forestry blocks.  🚨We experienced the highest fault volumes and damage to the network since Cyclone Gabrielle! 🚨More than 25,000 customers affected.  🚨Crews attended 1,689 jobs. 🚨More than 500 power lines downed. 🚨More than 250 field staff (not including vegetation crews, traffic management contractors and support staff) worked 12-14 hours days to carry out repairs and restore power. Thank you for your mahi! #BetterTogether #Storm #Energy #Powerco_NZ Northpower Downer Energy & Utilities  Jason Franklin Karen Frew Jemma Gerring Stuart Dickson Don Elers Chris Taylor Ryno Verster
