Gold prices jumped by Rs 20,500 per tola in a single day after the government doubled customs duties on gold imports from 10% to 20% in the new budget. Silver prices also rose after customs duties were increased. Gold jewellers say the move has sharply raised import costs, while questions remain over how the newly introduced skill-promotion fee will be used. https://lnkd.in/gXBm7Zh8

Nepal is set to announce its new budget at a time of big political promises, rising inflation, increasing debt, growing public obligations, and weakening public trust. Yet, despite these challenges, several key economic indicators have improved in recent months. Foreign exchange reserves have climbed to NRs 3.494 trillion in mid-April 2026, enough to cover imports of goods and services for the next 18.4 months. Remittance inflows have also surged by 39.1%, reaching NRs 209.75 billion in Chaitra alone this fiscal year. So, what should be the government’s top priority in this year’s budget? https://lnkd.in/ggTtesms

Nepal’s gold jewellery sector is facing increasing pressure from changing import quotas, higher taxes, and ongoing risks of smuggling. Gold has long been part of our culture and economy, but the industry that depends on it is struggling with unstable import policies, uneven distribution, and rising costs. Frequent shifts in quotas and duties have created uncertainty in supply and led to sharp price fluctuations, making business planning difficult for jewellers, writes Mukesh Jodhani, a gold jeweller with over a decade of experience in the industry. If Nepal is serious about building a transparent and globally competitive gold market, it needs consistent import rules, fair distribution of raw gold, and a predictable tax system. Without timely reforms, the ongoing cycle of shortages, volatility, and informal trade will continue to weaken a sector that sustains thousands of jobs and makes a meaningful contribution to the national economy, Jodhani further argues. https://lnkd.in/euBnpEWA
