The #1 mistake I see new Power Platform devs make? Ignoring the Dataverse. When I started my career in the Power Platform, I loved integrating Canvas Apps with SharePoint. At the time, there was nothing wrong with what I was doing... until there was. The use cases started getting more and more complex, and my Canvas Apps were starting to slow down (;-;) - I needed an alternative. I started digging around and found this neat storage that was native to the Power Platform. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 🟢 The more I dug into what it could do, the more complex it became, and the more overwhelmed I was. Demotivated and struggling for time, I moved back to integrating Canvas Apps with SharePoint, until I was forced to use the Dataverse. If granting access to a table in your data platform still means emailing around for approval. I have some good news for you: you can now click on an object and hit the “Request Access” button in a similar way to SharePoint. Here’s how it works: - Email Destinations: Send access request details to one or more email addresses. - External Destinations: Route requests to Slack, Microsoft Teams, or any system that accepts incoming webhooks (e.g., Jira, ServiceNow). - Redirect URL Destination: Redirect users to your organization’s external access request system instead of the in-product form. 💡 Pro tip: Admins can even set catalog owners as the default destination for all catalogs via a single toggle in the workspace admin page. 👉 To use the request button, users just need the BROWSE privilege. Why this matters: Access governance is often one of the biggest blockers for data teams. By embedding access requests into the product, Databricks simplifies this process. YAML + Copilot = Power Apps There are many new features rolling out for Power Apps and one is Code View with YAML. I decided to see what happens when I combine Copilot with YAML to build parts of a Power App. This feels like just the beginning and learning some of these concepts will be a huge benefit in the future. 🚀 From SharePoint to Dataverse – Automated & Seamless! I just set up a Power Automate flow that syncs new and updated items from my SharePoint list to Dataverse — no manual steps, no duplication, just smart integration. 💡 Here's what the flow does: ✅ Triggers when a new idea is submitted in the SharePoint list ✅ Checks if a record with the same Email already exists in the Dataverse table ✅ If found → updates the Dataverse record ✅ If not → adds a new row ✅ Uses a simple UpdatedBy Flow flag to prevent infinite loops This setup is super helpful when we're moving from SharePoint-based apps to Dataverse-Powered solutions, especially in Canvas Apps, Copilot Studio, or scalable business apps. 📢 You can also find the full step-by-step guide on my page 👉 LowCodeDev — created especially for beginners learning Power Platform integration. #PowerPlatform

I'm a Power Platform guy, why do I bother writing about Microsoft Project? Because Power Platform was supposed to be the next platform for the server elements of Project. But as we've seen happen on some other fronts where MS tries to replace legacy tech with modern solutions (*cough* Power Automate *cough"), sometimes parity never arrives. There's a lesson in there that touches everyone working with business tools in the Microsoft ecosystem. Don't just take the product marketing message of the vendor at face value and start believing that "this is the future we must all aim for together". In 2020, Microsoft encouraged Project Online customers to start preparing to migrate to Project for the Web. It was going to be the future. However, P4W was discontinued last month. Yesterday, MS announced that Project Online will retire in September 2026. There is no feature parity available in the current MS cloud nor an easy option for migrating to any current projects. Despite the 2020 FAQ page still claiming the following: "At some point in the future we will be providing native migration tools to move project data from your existing Project Online environment to Project for the web." Well, that was 5 years ago... For the question "When will Project for the web reach feature parity with Project Online?", the MS answer included the dreaded word: "Project for the web gives us an opportunity to re-imagine Microsoft Project. Rather than re-building feature by feature, we are focused on providing capabilities that meet the changing needs of work management." "Re-imagine." Meaning, let's imagine that enterprise project management requirements don't exist and that probabilistic AI agents will handle the PM work in the near future. Just like they'll take care of business process automation needs. "Our industry does not respect tradition — it only respects innovation." Satya Nadella, in 2014, when assuming his new role as the CEO of Microsoft. Traditional, some would say iconic brands, like Microsoft Office and Microsoft Project are an example of something that get little respect these days from their original makers. If the Office brand can be sacrificed, niche products like Project aren't going to be spared either. There's nothing wrong with developing new tech. It's essential for software companies. What we should all remember is that the needs of existing customers are rarely the driver for investments for companies like Microsoft. The key driver is growth opportunities. It's not about "better", it's about "more". For as long as the markets reward spending billions into GenAI, there's little incentive to keep investing in existing products. Especially if they don't support your company's core narrative of how you imagine the future to be. If a Project Online customer has been waiting for MS to bridge the gaps that stopped them from adopting Planner, then... They are screwed. 12 months until lights off will be a crisis for the remaining customers.
