  • 🚀 Liftoff! This week marks the launch of European Space Agency - ESA's BIOMASS satellite, bringing exciting new opportunities to global forest monitoring. With the ability to penetrate the forest canopy, BIOMASS will deliver 3D cross-sections of the world’s forests. This means significant advances in measuring biomass and carbon stocks, especially in tropical regions where ground inventories are scarce and current satellite data often underestimates standing biomass. 🌍 Why does this matter? At Satelligence, we are already preparing to integrate BIOMASS data into our forest monitoring platform, with first observations expected early next year. For our clients, this means: ✅ More accurate Scope 3 emissions data based on direct measurement ✅ Better evidence for carbon removal claims - from agroforestry to reforestation 🛰️ The launch of BIOMASS opens up parts of the forest that no one has ever truly seen before and we look forward to big breakthroughs in transparency, accountability, and sustainability of commodity supply chains! To date, airborne LiDAR has often been used to measure biomass, but it remains costly and is therefore not available worldwide. Biomass will provide similar height quality but on a much larger geographic scale. 📰 As a trusted perspective in the industry, Satelligence was invited to share our thoughts on the launch in Dutch national media this week, including de Volkskrant, NRC, and RTL Nederland (pictured below)! In particular, we highlighted how the BIOMASS mission will shape the next generation of forest data and how Satelligence will bring this to our customers. As always, we best serve our clients and the planet by integrating the most advanced technology into actionable insights for those navigating ESG, deforestation risk, and carbon performance. 🌴 Learn more about how we support sustainable supply chains: https://lnkd.in/eV6zG7sg #BIOMASS #SatelliteData #ForestMonitoring #ESG #EUDR #Scope3

🌴 Independently verified forest data you can trust - what the industry’s most trusted Forest Baseline means for you and your business. Open source datasets have laid a strong foundation for sustainable sourcing, but as regulations and reporting requirements become more stringent, companies need more than raw data. 🌏 This is where our forest baseline comes in - built from data processed in-house, as well as several third-party layers from various providers, the Satelligence forest baseline layer covers commodity plantations and farms across the globe. Crucially, it differentiates between several forest types, namely primary forest, disturbed moist forest, regrowth forest, dry and seasonal forest, and native vegetation. In its new independent report published in April this year, the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, in collaboration with the World Cocoa Foundation (WCF), concluded that Satelligence delivers the highest accuracy data for #deforestationfree compliance and Scope 3 reporting across key production regions. 🤝 Building from our EY-certified status, this recognition reinforces our position as the most trusted provider of #deforestationrisk data, powered largely by our forest baseline layer. How the Satelligence Forest Baseline stands out: 🛰️ More complete coverage – Combines national maps, open datasets, and proprietary data to offer a more comprehensive view than any single source. 🛰️ Globally consistent – Uniform classes, definitions, and terminology across all regions from Southeast Asia to Canada. 🛰️ Cleans and corrects open data – Excludes datasets with insufficient resolution or quality, ensuring only the most reliable inputs are used. 🛰️ Smart modelling techniques – Uses methods such as forward- and back-propagation to better distinguish between forest and crops, including older plantations. 👩💻 In a recent internal research carried out by the Satelligence data team, 462 samples across Côte d’Ivoire were assessed to evaluate the baseline’s ability to distinguish forest from non-forest areas (without looking at individual forest classes) in a complex agricultural landscape. The results showed an Overall Accuracy (OA) of 93%, which is significantly higher than several widely used open datasets. These internal findings align with the independent CIAT and WCF report (2025), which found that Satelligence had the most robust forest identification in Côte d’Ivoire with both high precision (87%) and recall (71%) scores. By staying critical and constantly assessing our value to the market, as well as working closely with industry partners, we ensure that our data insights help businesses reduce risk, make confident sourcing decisions, and achieve meaningful climate action. 📑 Read the full internal assessment of our Forest Baseline here: https://lnkd.in/esjJ_6HA #DeforestationMonitoring #SustainableSupplyChains

  • 💚 Thank you for joining our mission! Recently, our LinkedIn follower count toppled over the 10,000 mark. In the grand scheme of things, a social media platform can feel quite removed from the reality of our work; in fact, so can the process of observing deforestation across the world’s most vital ecosystems from satellite imagery. Satelligence was born from our founder’s real-life experiences of deforestation in Indonesia. For that reason, it has always been important to us to ground our mission in the tangible, and we do this by collaborating with global partners, local players and stakeholders, and by cross-referencing satellite data with fieldwork and on-the-ground perspectives. 🌏 More than a number! Reaching 10,000 followers is a sign that an increasing number of companies and individuals care about transparency, accountability, and driving real impact in supply chains. We see this as not only validation of our mission (although that’s nice to have!), but also as a growing collective voice for nature, people, and the future of sustainable business. 🌱 This milestone reminds us that we are not working alone. Behind every stakeholder we support is a chain reaction of better practices, stronger policies, and improved livelihoods. And that is something to celebrate! 🎉🍰 So, today we shared the news with our team in the Utrecht HQ in the tastiest way possible! 🍫 In March, Satelligence attended the World Cocoa Foundation Partnership Meeting in São Paulo where our Customer Success Lead Amy Ching moderated the Session “Mapping your way out of the maze of deforestation and carbon claims”. One of the key takeaways from this discussion was that achieving credible carbon and deforestation-free claims in cocoa demands a collaborative effort between companies, project implementers, and carbon accounting experts. Across the board, technology must be leveraged in order to navigate complex regulations and ensure verifiable, impactful action across the supply chain. After the event, Amy and our Business Developer for LATAM Lydia Suzuki Esmerio joined a field trip to Bahia, organised by CocoaAction Brasil and WCF. 👨🌾👩🌾 Across 5 days, the group visited 4 farms representing various different agroforestry systems, as well as several initiatives and entities focused on strengthening the cocoa agribusiness in Brazil. These entities work hard to not only increase production and quality of cocoa, but also to improve the livelihoods of farmers through mentorship and active collaboration. It was especially valuable to visit these farms and region as we continue our work to support farmers and companies by better identifying cocoa in complex mosaic landscapes and measuring carbon in agroforestry systems so that impact and benefits are properly captured. 🤝 From discussions in the expo hall to firsthand insights in the field, it is clear that collaboration is key to building resilient supply chains. As the global cocoa industry navigates challenges such as lower yields and rising prices, data-driven insights help turn shared goals into tangible progress. 🛰️ At Satelligence, we empower the cocoa sector with real-time satellite monitoring, helping companies ensure sustainable sourcing, manage risks, and comply with the approaching launch of #EUDR. By providing accurate, coherent, and actionable insights, we support businesses in making informed decisions that drive both sustainability and profitability. We are very grateful to Cocoa Action Brasil, WCF, and all farmers and organisations involved for putting together such a valuable trip! 📸 We hope you enjoy these snapshots from the week! 🚀Satelligence announces the world’s first high-quality, publicly accessible global coffee map!🚀 🤝We have joined forces with the International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) to make this happen! Why? To level the playing field for smallholders, and make #EUDR and #CSRD compliance much easier and cheaper. As a global research institute specialised in tropical commodities, CIAT brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in mapping commodities such as coffee. ☕ “At the moment, there is no map plotting the world’s planted coffee. This makes it virtually impossible to verify whether a farm consists of natural forest, or coffee agroforestry, let alone if deforestation is driven by coffee plantation,” says Satelligence CEO, Niels Wielaard. 🛰️“For too long, smallholders have been invisible in the data behind global commodity monitoring systems — leading to costly misclassifications and unfair exclusion. With Sample Earth, and through our partnership with Satelligence, we’re changing that," explains Jacob van Etten, Research Director - Digital Inclusion (CIAT). "By combining inclusive, locally grounded reference data with Satelligence's cutting-edge satellite and AI technology, we’re setting a new standard for transparency and equity in land cover mapping. Together, we’re not just improving data — we’re ensuring smallholders can prove their coffee is deforestation-free and remain active participants in global markets.” 📹 Here is a video from Satelligence CEO, Niels Wielaard, expressing our excitement for the collaboration!
