This month, the Network Performing Arts Production Workshop (NPAPW) 2025 brought together performing artists, technologists, educators, and students from around the world. A joint initiative of GÉANT and Internet2, NPAPW25 explored what happens when creativity meets advanced networks. Hosted and streamed live from The New School in New York City, the two-day programme included: 🔷 Performing Arts & Advanced Networking 101 – Justin Trieger from the New World Symphony traced the history of network-enabled music, dance, and theatre performances from the late 1990s to today. 🔷 Technical updates from GARR and CESNET on LoLa and UltraGrid, showing how these systems developed by #NRENs continue to support the global community of artists and performers. 🔷 MVTP use cases from CESNET, the Manhattan School of Music, and the Royal College of Music, highlighting seamless remote teaching and collaboration. 🔷 Cross-disciplinary projects from Coventry University, Consorci de Serveis Universitaris de Catalunya (CSUC), and Anglia Ruskin University, connecting theatre, dance, and science, and showing new ways networks enable creativity. 🔷 And much much more A true highlight of the event was the distributed concert linking New York and Miami, where musicians performed Hans Krása’s Tanec with only 30 ms delay—a perfect demonstration of how networks can carry human expression at the speed of light. 👏 Thank you to everyone who presented, performed, and joined online. NPAPW continues to show that research and education networks are cultural infrastructures: a space where technologists rediscover artistry, musicians embrace science, and networks become instruments bringing artists and creatives together across distance. 🔗 Read the full recap by Domenico (Dom) Vicinanza: https://lnkd.in/erXyT6Ca

⏳ The countdown is on: the #TNC26 Call for Proposals closes this week. In June, our community will gather in Helsinki to explore “Digital Sisu.” This year’s theme is inspired by the Finnish concept of “sisu” that embodies inner strength, resilience, and determination. It’s a fitting lens for our R&E community working through the complexity of today’s digital world. We’re looking for presentations, interactive sessions, and side meetings that encourage collaboration and spark new thinking. Whether you want to share your research, walk us through a new piece of transformative technology, or lead a discussion on pressing challenges our community is facing, we want to hear from you. This month, GÉANT was in Ireland for HEAnet Conference 2025 – the premier event bringing Ireland’s education and research community. Organised by our NREN member HEAnet, this year’s edition brought together more than 480 participants under the theme “Connecting Education, Empowering Research.” Our CEO Lise Fuhr joined the panel “Building the Infrastructure of Ideas: Building the Next Generation University” with Ronan Byrne (HEAnet), Heidi Fraser-Krauss (Jisc), and Dr Gerard Culley (University College Cork). Here are a few highlights from the panel: 🔷 Discussion on values-driven innovation – technology should be guided by trust, security, and the public good, and this should remain the European perspective. 🔷 On European digital sovereignty – it’s important to pursue strategic autonomy through hybrid approaches, aiming for pragmatic sovereignty, not isolation. 🔷 On cultural change as an enabler – lasting digital transformation depends as much on mindset and ways of working as on technology itself. 🔷 Collaboration and shared knowledge – the unique strength of European #Research & #Education (R&E) community lies in its culture of collaboration and knowledge exchange, which is essential in addressing challenges posed by new technologies such as #AI. Our very own Monique Pellinkhof and Magdalena Rzaca also joined the programme, unpacking the future of EU collaborations, and what the EU AI Act means for the R&E community. 👏 A big thank you to the HEAnet team for an excellent event, and congratulations on your new name! Great energy, lively discussions, and good company all around.

AI-driven impersonations are becoming part of our everyday online life—from fake stories featuring high-profile figures to cloned voices that sound exactly like someone you know. And while #AI makes these scams look more convincing, the tactics behind them haven’t changed. The goal is still the same: create pressure so you act before you think. That’s where #digitalmindfulness comes in. A short pause can make all the difference. ▶️ Swipe through the carousel, take a moment, and ask yourself: What would you do? 💬 And share your tips with us: How do you spot AI #deepfakes or impersonations? 🌐 eduGAIN piloting use of OpenID Federation Today, eduGAIN runs on SAML, a technology that has supported our #Research & #Education community for many years. But with SAML now considered a legacy technology, and with OpenID Connect 1.0 and OAuth 2.0 widely adopted across the industry, the question becomes: how do we bring modern protocols into a trust model that works at global scale? That is exactly what the new eduGAIN service pilot is exploring. As part of the GÉANT GN5-2 project, the 12-month pilot is testing how OpenID Federation could be used as the future trust technology for eduGAIN, working alongside the current SAML infrastructure. 🔗 Read more in the latest #CONNECT50 article by Lars Fuglevaag (Sikt – Norwegian Agency for Shared Services in Education and Research): https://lnkd.in/eFrnf7we

🚨 An email pops up: “Quick! Can you upload the contract here? My VPN’s down!” It looks like your colleague. It feels urgent. But is it real? 👀 Smishing messages like these exploit collegial trust and work urgency, making us act before we think. It’s easy to slip into autopilot when we’re busy. But #digitalmindfulness means slowing down, even if for just a few seconds. Stretch. Breathe. Reset. Then go back to the email and check it again. 🔗 Watch the video, explore our 2025 #GEANTCybersecurity campaign and download ready-to-use materials: https://lnkd.in/ettihCiC 🔜 And don’t miss our upcoming webinar with Rosanne Pouw (SURF) on 13 November.
