European Space Agency - ESA Director of Technology Dietmar Pilz highlighting a number of recent and upcoming GSTP UK supported missions including Lumio, Henon and Proba 3.
When the majority of new missions at the European Space Agency (ESA) are envisioned, the technology that will make them possible does not even exist – yet. It is the job of ESA’s Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality (TEC) to identify the required enabling innovations, make them real and bring them up to the needed level of performance and reliability so that the right technology is ready at just the right time.

🚀 The future of space technology is being shaped today, and Spanish innovation is right at the launchpad. We are thrilled to kick off SmallSat Europe 2026! To mark the start, we have accompanied the Spanish delegation on an exclusive technical visit to the European Space Research and Technology Centre, the engineering heart of the European Space Agency - ESA. Our companies explored firsthand top-tier space innovation facilities: the Concurrent Design Facility (CDF), the Planetary Robotics Laboratory, and the Orbital Robotics Laboratory. 🌟 A huge thank you to Corentin LE BERRE, Esther Bastida Pertegaz, and Martin Azkarate for their incredible guidance, insights, and expert presentations! 📍 Come and meet the delegation! Visit us at the RAI Amsterdam, Stand 550, under the Spain Space (ICEX) pavilion. 🔗 Discover more about the participating Spanish companies and their innovative projects here: https://lnkd.in/euwBAmpU
The European Space Agency - ESA invites you to the 3rd edition of the RAMS conference Are you working in RAMS (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety) or any RAMS-adjacent domain in the space industry, academia, at an agency or in any other industry? Then this event is for you! 📅 23-25 June 2026 📍 ESA ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands 🖊️ Register here before 15 June: https://lnkd.in/ePAwzB5m The theme of this edition is ‘Space meets Earth: a global RAMS conference’ and features two inspirational keynote speakers: 🎤 Samantha Cristoforetti, ESA astronaut, whose unique experience in long-duration missions aboard the International Space Station provides a compelling perspective on RAMS. 🕐 Her talk is scheduled for Thursday 25 June, 10:00-11:00 🎤 Nancy Lindsey (Topping), retired NASA RAMS Engineer and Deputy R&M Technical Fellow. Throughout a career of supporting defence, commercial, science and Earth observation missions, she has experience ensuring that RAMS perspectives are heard when they matter most. 🕐 Her talk is scheduled for Wednesday 24 June, 10:00-11:00 For more information about the conference, please visit https://lnkd.in/eJ-pR7BR. We hope to see you there!

How do university laboratories and local aerospace companies get their hardware onto key space science missions? The answer is ESA's PRODEX programme (PROgramme de Développement d'Expériences scientifiques). Right now, the European Space Agency - ESA manages over 400 active Prodex contracts. These partnerships bring together academic research and commercial space industry. They directly fund the development of highly advanced scientific instruments and experiments across Earth observation, microgravity, and space science missions, such as: 🛰️ ESA Space Science: #Smile, #Plato, #CometInterceptor, #Envision, #LISAmission, #ExoMars, #NewAthena, and #Arrakihs. 🧑🚀 Orbital Labs: Instrumentation for the International #SpaceStation. 🌍 Global Partnerships on non-ESA missions including NASA's Commercial Lunar Payloads Services #CLPS, JAXA's #Solar_C, and #POLAR2. By participating in Prodex, 17 European nations boost their national scientific know-how, forge industrial and institutional cooperation, and increase their competitiveness in the space domain. 👇 Read about recent and upcoming successes: https://lnkd.in/eAwvmPVy
Can satellite imagery be used as evidence in a court of law? 🛰️⚖️ A new article on the ESA Discovery website explores the 'Earth Observation for Human Rights and Legal Accountability Mechanisms' project, led by doctoral researcher Seonaid Rapach at the University of Strathclyde. The project examined how Earth observation data can be systematically analysed and presented to meet the evidentiary standards required in legal proceedings – and what still needs to be done before satellite imagery can take its place alongside DNA and digital forensics as a trusted form of evidence in courts around the world. On 13 May 2026, European Space Agency - ESA co-organised the first Deep-Tech × Space Summit at the European Space Deep-Tech Innovation Centre (ESDI) in Switzerland, in partnership with PSI Paul Scherrer Institut at Switzerland Innovation Park Innovaare. This half-day summit brought together Chief Technology Officers and technology leaders from Europe’s deep tech and space sectors to discuss challenges, opportunities, and the commercialisation of deep tech. In the opening session, ESA representatives Johann Richard, Head of ESDI, and Dietmar Pilz, Director of ESA Technology, Engineering and Quality, supported the conversation around the practical conditions needed to move innovation forward, highlighting the importance of talent, infrastructure, supply chains, timing, and incentives. Dietmar Pilz also contributed to the discussion on Technology Foresight and Supply Chain Intelligence, where the need to strengthen resilience in deep-tech and space supply chains, and to rethink systems rather than simply optimise existing models, was discussed. Did you know that ESA Technology, through its General Support Technology Programme (GSTP), has identified cybersecurity products to strengthen the security of future space missions? European Space Agency - ESA has published the “(Cyber)Security Products for Space Systems Protection 2026–2028” document, identifying priority products for accelerated development. These focus on technologies already at or beyond Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 5, mature solutions ready for wider adoption, and essential baseline capabilities needed to strengthen the security posture of future missions. ESA invites European entities to express non-binding interest via esa-star portal, contributing to the aggregation of industry demand, informing national delegations and supporting alignment between ESA planning, national priorities and industrial capabilities.
