Planting a better future with smallholder farmers
Over ons
Our mission is to support and enable smallholder farmers in their transition towards more sustainable agricultural practices. By planting agroforestry systems, we help farmers turn their climate action into carbon income. Our roots are traced back to Rabobank, a global financial institution with a 125-year heritage supporting farmers and agricultural initiatives. Today, we uphold our heritage as Acorn B.V., working together with local partners to support farmers across Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Inclusive #datagovernance is a critical component to empowering smallholder farmers. This paper, published by our partner Fair & Smart Data (FSD), examines the current state of agricultural data collection, noting the importance of participatory governance and context-sensitive design. An interesting takeaway from the paper is that "technical innovations must be accompanied by institutional and ethical frameworks that prioritise smallholder rights, agency, and benefit, and by funding and methodological practices that enable and reward their sustained involvement." At Acorn, we are always working towards improving our own data collection processes to integrate such inclusive and fair practices. This publication is a great reminder for all of us in the #carbonmarket space to be more intentional with our processes.
New year, same us─ asking who really controls agricultural data and who benefits. A new publication by the FSD team, Sidi Amar and Ron Cörvers, with graduate student Nóra Bori, examines how digitalisation is generating vast amounts of agricultural data while smallholder farmers remain largely excluded from its governance and value. 📢 Acorn has been highlighted as a promising model by the Global Center on Adaptation's recent brief on #adaptationfinance: "Beyond its quantitative impact, the [Acorn] model demonstrates that adaptation finance can be both effective and inclusive. It offers a scalable pathway for expanding access to financing and support for adaptation to smallholders, fully financed by private carbon markets." Read the brief here: https://bit.ly/49mzFqo
🔥 New resource on local access to adaptation finance! #COP30 is well under way, with a welcome focus on #adaptation, implementation, and the needs of local communities. The Report on the Baku to Belém Roadmap and the UNEP Adaptation Gap Report both show clearly how much work remains to mobilize and deploy enough #adaptationfinance. ⚠️ But who actually gets #access to that finance? Data suggest that less than 1% of #climatefinance is for adaptation with a focus on local communities. This has to change, because #climatechange is playing out at the household level: World Bank #Findex data show that 1 in 3 adults in low-income countries were personally hit by climate shocks in the last three years and the vast majority of them lost income and/or assets as a result. 👉 The central question must therefore be: How do we get financing for adaptation and resilience in their hands? One unique solution exists that is barely being used today: #inclusivefinance. This is a global sector developed over half a century specifically to get small-ticket impact finance into the hands of low-income populations worldwide. The tool is there - we just need to make use of it. CGAP has been working with a broad group of actors from both climate and inclusive finance to highlight this unique and unused opportunity to get adaptation finance directly to the most vulnerable. Today we're sharing a short briefing note that summarizes the key points, jointly published with the Global Center on Adaptation. It comes along with a primer on inclusive finance for those who aren't familiar. At Acorn, partnerships are at the heart of everything we do. By collaborating with incredible organisations, we’re united to improve farmer livelihoods and drive meaningful change. Together.
Very proud to be working at Acorn Rabobank with these great partners in their value chains. Together with Lavazza Fondazione Lavazza, Volcafe, Solidaridad Network Colombia and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH we are supporting smallholder farmers in their transition to an agroforestry system, while connecting them to the Voluntary Carbon Market. This is a great example of how different traders, roasters, NGO’s and banks can work together to support smallholder farmers. Watch this video and get inspired about this great teamwork! Many thanks to everyone involved: Veronica Rossi, Angela Aiello, Federica Princi, Vivian Vasquez, Sebastián Pinzón, Joel Brounen, Jelmer van de Mortel, Paola López, Eline Kajim, Joost Hamelink @carlos Isaza, Juan Fernando G., Jonathan Slim Mora, Sabine Triemer and many more! #growingabetterworldtogether #Acorn #insetting #carbonremovals #sustainablevaluechains

Market Uptake | Connecting Producers to Sustainable Markets! In 2024, Solidaridad East and Central Africa unlocked new opportunities for small-scale farmers by connecting them to high-value markets, proving that with the right tools and partnerships, small-scale farmers can thrive in the global economy. 16,000 farmers onboarded to Solichain, our blockchain-powered traceability platform, enabling end-to-end transparency and building buyer confidence across supply chains. 11,530 carbon credits sold to Microsoft through Acorn, delivering €273,738 in direct income to 5,499 #Ugandan farmers managing 23,787 hectares—transforming climate action into tangible rural returns. #Kenya’s first organic-certified coffee—from two estates and three cooperatives—is set to hit global shelves in 2025, thanks to our work on EU Organic certification. In #Ethiopia, farmers secured €0.73 million in pre-sale contracts for legumes, demonstrating the power of aggregation, compliance, and traceability in securing premium market deals. These are more than numbers. They reflect growing global demand for ethically sourced, climate-smart products and our region’s capacity to meet it. 👉 Championing traceable, ethical, and climate-resilient supply chains? Let’s connect and make sustainable sourcing work for small-scale farmers. Just over a month ago at the Carbon Farming Summit in Dublin, I engaged with the team behind the Soil Carbon International Research Consortium (IRC), where I am a steering committee member, to put together the great video below! The aim of Soil Carbon IRC is to support soil carbon research at the international level and to promote information sharing and access to soil carbon research results, while enabling potential synergies at the global level. What a great mission! Fully in line with Rabobank's #growingabetterworldtogether #soilcarbon #carbonfarming #research
[VIDEO] Today in our #CarbonTalks series, we’re joined by Mila Luleva, Head of Remote Sensing at Rabobank, to explore how the finance sector is shaping the future of #CarbonFarming 🪙🚜 Learn how Rabobank integrates remote sensing technologies to monitor #soil health and carbon performance, and how financial institutions can play a leading role in building credible, transparent carbon markets. By connecting farmers with data and incentives, #banks like Rabobank are helping to turn soil carbon into a viable and trusted asset 🌱📈 🎥 Watch the episode to see how finance is supporting the growth of the Soil Carbon IRC: https://lnkd.in/eGFptGsV

Victor Murei (Picture 1) is a climate hero. He is one of almost 100,000 farmers in Kenya, Uganda, Colombia and Nicaragua who have been onboarded to carbon markets within our Climate Heroes programme. 🌱 Since 2022, the programme I manage has aimed to improve farmers’ resilience through agroforestry practices, technical support, and access to @Acorn. Two weeks ago, we gathered in Kitale, Kenya – with teams from across the globe (Picture 2) – to reflect, connect, and learn. Our shared goal: to take the programme to the next level by improving the quality of trainings and on-the-ground support. Because scale alone is not enough. Now, it’s all about: “Quality First: Strengthening Climate Heroes for lasting impact.” Some key takeaways and reflections: 🔁 Across countries, we’re facing similar challenges – which makes cross-country collaboration and shared learning so valuable. 🌐 Through South-South knowledge exchange – from Colombia and Nicaragua to Uganda and Kenya – we’re building a powerful learning ecosystem. This year, we were also excited to welcome peers from Peru and Tanzania to the conversation. 🧠 Our breakout sessions offered space for honest discussion and hands-on problem-solving, helping surface practical solutions that can be applied across contexts. As we shift from onboarding to delivering lasting impact, I’m deeply inspired by the drive and dedication of our field teams (Picture 3). One thing is clear: turning farmers into Climate Heroes takes more than trees. It requires curiosity, local leadership, and a culture of continuous learning. Proud to be part of this journey – and incredibly grateful to the Dutch Postcode Lottery for making it possible. 🌿 #ClimateHeroes #Agroforestry Acorn, Solidaridad East and Central Africa, Solidaridad Latinoamérica, Solidaridad Network, Cool Farm Alliance
