The valuation compression in US software companies is impacting African startups. But not in the way most people think. Dr. Dotun Olowoporoku, Managing Partner at Ventures Platform Fund, breaks down the mechanism that most people are missing. It comes down to arbitrage: → A $500M fund investing mainly in North America spots a comparable African business → Same revenue. Lower valuation. Easy internal pitch: get in cheap, wait for the gap to close. → Even at a discount, everyone sees the upside That logic only works when US multiples are high. Now that US valuations have compressed, the spread disappears, and so do the opportunistic investors who were chasing it. What's left: dedicated funds focused on Africa. Not global players passing through when the math made sense. Less capital. Harder follow-on assumptions. A fundraising environment every African founder needs to understand. Our Women's Month spotlight continues with Damilola Teidi, Principal and Head of Platform and Networks at Ventures Platform Fund, one of Africa's most active early-stage venture firms. With over 13 years at the intersection of startups, capital, and ecosystem development, Dami leads Ventures Platform's post-investment strategy, designing initiatives that support portfolio companies across talent, governance, market expansion, and capital access. The goal is straightforward: help founders grow faster and build better. What stands out when working with Dami is the care she brings to every detail. She asks the right questions, pushes for the best outcomes, and carries the Ventures Platform brand with a level of dedication that is genuinely rare. That kind of commitment does not go unnoticed. People who show up like this are exactly why the ecosystem moves forward. We are glad to work alongside her. #IWD2026 #WomenInVC #WomenInLeadership #AfricanTech #IWD

Last week, we unveiled the first set of Letters Across Time - written by women across our network to their younger selves, daughters, and the next generation. Each letter, a reflection on what rights, justice, and the courage to act truly means. Today, we turn to the voices of women within our portfolio: Odunayo Eweniyi Eweniyi of Piggyvest, Atinuke Idowu of Termii, and our colleagues: Ezinne Ejimofor and Moyosoreoluwa Ogunkoya. From founding and scaling companies to enabling capital flow and supporting decision-making behind the scenes, their work reflects the many ways women are driving progress and influence. Read their letters, reflect on them, and pass them on - because the wisdom we share today shapes the women who lead tomorrow. #LettersThatShapeUs #InternationalWomensMonth #RightsJusticeAction #VenturesPlatform #BackedByVP

If you could send a letter across time - to your younger self, your daughter, or the next generation of women - what would you say about rights, justice, and the courage to act? Across the venture and technology ecosystem, women are building companies, shaping products, allocating capital, and redefining what leadership looks like. Along that journey come moments that test conviction - moments where rights must be claimed, fairness defended, and action taken. Through Letters That Shape Us, women across our network reflect on those moments - the lessons that shaped them and the future they hope to make possible for those who will build after them. Some letters are deeply personal. Others quietly powerful. All are worth reading. #Lettersthatshapeus #InternationalWomensMonth #VenturesPlatform #BackedByVP

Rights. Justice. Action. These pillars are more than ideals - they are lived, experienced, and fought for every day. This International Women’s Day, we pause to honour the journeys of our women who build and lead - the moments they claimed their rights, sought justice, or took action to shape the world around them today. Through letters from female founders and leaders within our network, we explore and reflect on the 2026 theme “Rights, justice, action. For all women and girls” Follow these reflections as they are featured across our social pages in the weeks ahead.
