It's definitely legible in my opinion. I don't think it makes sense to put any stock in the capabilities of any notation software. New orthography is created all the time and even the most flexible software can't keep up.Todd Wilcox– Todd Wilcox2025-12-31 16:23:11 +00:00Commented 19 hours ago

A fascinating question! I agree with @ToddWilcox that it's legible, but as it's uncommon to find such notation you will probably have to clarify your meaning. From a percussion perspective I wouldn't be surprised if this becomes fairly common in a short period of time (as it has been suggested many times before). However, from a keyboard perspective the triplet-indicating "3" may be accidentally interpreted as a fingering.Hamelin– Hamelin2025-12-31 16:38:16 +00:00Commented 19 hours ago

@Hamelin tuplet figures are typically easily to distinguish from fingerings by virtue of their different typeface and larger size. Also, if the score provides fingerings elsewhere then it should provide them for the abbreviated passage, further reducing the likelihood of confusion.phoog– phoog2026-01-01 10:19:28 +00:00Commented 1 hour ago

@ToddWilcox It is not at all new orthography. I know engravings that are well older than a century that use this exact notation.Lazy– Lazy2026-01-01 10:35:43 +00:00Commented 1 hour ago

@Hamelin It has not only been suggested before, it has been used in professional editing for a long time now.Lazy– Lazy2026-01-01 10:37:07 +00:00Commented 1 hour ago

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. electric-guitar), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
