  • We’ve all been there, running through the motions of a 1-2-1, checking boxes, and getting polite, surface-level answers. But as this post highlights, "polite" rarely drives performance. In my work with executive teams, I’ve found that the quality of a leader's output is directly tied to the quality of their curiosity. If you want specific results, you have to ask specific questions. Question #3 is a personal favourite: "What’s a decision you’re waiting on from me?" It takes courage to ask, but it’s the fastest way to clear the path for your team. Which of these 5 questions would change the dynamic of your next 1-2-1? #ExecutiveCoaching #LeadershipDevelopment #EffectiveCommunication #TeamGrowth #CoachingMalta

When you ask "How are you?", you’ll almost always get the same default response: "I’m good, thanks. You?" It’s a polite social script, but in a high-stakes leadership environment, it’s a wasted opportunity. It doesn't uncover bottlenecks, it doesn't build trust, and it definitely doesn't help your team grow. If you want to move past the surface and actually support your people, you need to change the prompt. Try these 5 questions in your next 1-on-1 instead: 1. "What’s the one thing on your plate this week that’s draining your energy?" Why it works: It identifies friction points before they lead to "Quiet Cracking" or burnout. 2. "If you could remove one recurring meeting or process from your week, what would it be?" Why it works: It permits them to be a "process architect" and helps you spot organisational bloat. 3. "What’s a decision you’re waiting on from me that’s holding you back?" Why it works: It turns the mirror on you. It identifies where you are the bottleneck without making the employee feel like they’re "complaining." 4. "What’s one thing you’ve learned this week that we should be sharing with the rest of the team?" Why it works: It reinforces a growth mindset and moves the conversation from "tasks" to "insights." 5. "On a scale of 1–10, how 'clear' is our current priority? What would it take to get to a 10?" Why it works: It measures alignment. If they say 7, you now have a specific gap to bridge. Better leadership starts with better curiosity. When you ask specific questions, you get specific data. When you get specific data, you can provide meaningful support. Which of these would be the most revealing for your team right now? #LeadershipTips #Management #ExecutiveCoaching #EmployeeEngagement #OneOnOnes

  • Determination is the fuel. Satisfaction is the finish line. 🏁 Every morning, you have a choice: Will you be driven by your calendar, or by your purpose? "Wake up with determination. Go to bed with satisfaction." I work with leaders to sharpen that morning determination—refining their influence, mastering their presence, and building the emotional intelligence to lead teams through change. Why? Because when you lead with integrity and clear goals, that evening "satisfaction" isn't just about a checked-off to-do list—it's about knowing you made a tangible impact. How are you fueling your determination today? #Motivation #Leadership #CoachingMalta #ExecutiveGrowth #DailyHabits Karl Grech - PCC, ACTC (ICF)

Wake up with determination. Go to bed with satisfaction. I observe many leaders who are busy but not necessarily productive. They face a "firefighting" inbox each morning and end the day feeling drained, questioning where the time went. The distinction between exhaustion and satisfaction is found in the bridge of determination. Determination isn’t solely about hard work; it involves identifying your "One Big Thing" before external demands arise. By leading with clear intent, you transition from reacting to orchestrating. Today’s Challenge: Before opening your laptop tomorrow morning, define what "satisfaction" will look like by evening. Is it a challenging conversation addressed? A strategic plan completed? A team member coached? Set the determination. Earn the satisfaction. #ExecutiveCoaching #LeadershipMindset #HighPerformance #IntentionalLeadership #GrowthMindset

  • Innovation doesn't happen in a vacuum—it happens in environments of trust. This Mother's Day, let's acknowledge the women who lead with a "Nurturer-in-Chief" mindset. When people feel seen, they perform. It’s that simple. #PsychologicalSafety #EmpathyInBusiness #WorkplaceCulture

The most innovative teams aren't just the smartest—they are the most psychologically safe. Often, that safety is cultivated by the "mother figures" in the office. These are the women who: 1️⃣ Sense the burnout before the employee even mentions it. 2️⃣ Celebrate the small wins that others overlook. 3️⃣ Ensure every voice is heard in the meeting. This "Empathy-Driven Leadership" is often invisible, but it is the glue that prevents turnover and fuels creativity. When people feel cared for, they perform better. Period. This Mother’s Day, let’s go beyond the flowers. Let’s recognise the leadership value of empathy. To the women who nurture the culture of our companies: Your work is the backbone of our success. #CompanyCulture #PsychologicalSafety #EmotionalIntelligence #LeadershipDevelopment

  • The biggest mistake new leaders make? Thinking they need to have all the answers. When you try to solve every problem, you don't just get overwhelmed—you become the ultimate bottleneck. Your notifications turn into a war zone because your team can’t move without your "ok." Shift your focus: 👉 Don't solve, coach: Next time a team member brings you a problem, don't fix it. Ask: "What’s your proposed solution?" 👉 Protect your "Think Time": If you don't schedule time to look at the big picture, you'll spend your whole career in the weeds. 👉 Define "Done": Overwhelm thrives in ambiguity. Give your team crystal clear outcomes, then get out of their way. You weren't promoted to do the work of ten people. You were promoted to make ten people better at the work. Lead the work. Don't let the work lead you. Struggling to let go of the "doing"? I have a 5-step framework to help leaders delegate without losing quality. 👇 Comment "LEAD" and I’ll send it to your inbox. #LeadershipDevelopment #Delegation #ExecutiveCoaching #NewLeaders Coaching Malta Karl Grech - PCC, ACTC (ICF)

  • Nothing beats a room full of people cheering for your growth. Toastmasters International Toastmasters Malta

I spent yesterday evening at a Toastmasters Malta - Public Speaking and Leadership (Training & Development) meeting as a guest participant, and it was a powerful reminder that communication isn’t just a "soft skill"—it’s a career-defining superpower. Whether you're presenting to a board, leading a team, or inspiring a community, the ability to articulate your vision with clarity and presence is everything. Why Toastmasters continues to be a game-changer for me: 🎤 Presence on Stage: Learning how to own the room, manage nerves, and project confidence, even when the pressure is on. 🗣️ The Power of Vocabulary: Expanding my linguistic toolkit to ensure my message is not just heard, but felt and understood. 💪 Growth mindset and personal development : There is no substitute for the cycle of giving and receiving feedback in a non-judgmental, supportive environment. But beyond the technique, it’s the people that make it. The warmth and encouragement from the members yesterday was incredible. They were all there to help one another become better versions of ourselves. Public speaking is a journey of constant refinement. If you’re looking to sharpen your influence, I can’t recommend this environment enough. #PublicSpeaking #LeadershipDevelopment #Toastmasters #CommunicationSkills #ContinuousLearning #ExecutiveCoaching

  • Stop pretending you have all the answers. Your team already knows you don’t.

As a leader, there is an outdated belief that vulnerability is a sign of weakness—that if you don't have the "right" answer in every meeting, you’re losing control. In reality, the opposite is true. When you refuse to say "I don't know," you aren't projecting strength. You are creating a culture of guesswork. You’re signaling to your team that it’s safer to fake an answer than to admit to a gap in knowledge. Admitting "I don't have the answer" is actually a power move for three reasons: 1️⃣ It lowers the stakes for everyone else: When the leader removes the pressure to be perfect, the team stops managing their reputation and starts focusing on solving the problem. 2️⃣ It invites intelligence into the room: By admitting you’re stuck, you shift the dynamic from "The Boss Decides" to "The Team Collaborates." You immediately stop being the bottleneck and start being a conductor. 3️⃣ It builds radical trust: Your team knows when you’re bluffing. When you drop the facade, you aren't just earning respect; you are modeling the kind of honesty you expect them to show you when they hit a wall. The best leaders don’t provide the answers; they provide the environment where the best answers can be found. Next time you’re in a room and don’t have a clear path forward, try this: "I have some thoughts, but I’m not sure this is the right approach yet. What am I missing?" Watch what happens to the energy in the room. You’ll likely find that your team has had the answer all along—they were just waiting for the permission to speak it. #ExecutiveCoaching #LeadershipDevelopment #Vulnerability #PsychologicalSafety #ModernLeadership

Stop waiting for "bad behaviour" to fix itself. As an executive & team coach, I see many leaders avoid difficult conversations because they fear escalation. But silence is a choice—and it’s one that defines your culture. I was recently listening to Dave Stachowiak’s conversation with Nilofer Merchant , and it hit on a vital truth: Bad behavior is often the result of invisible norms within the organisation. If you want to shift how your team shows up, try these three steps to address behavior with clarity and empathy: 1. Get specific: Define the boundary. If it’s not defined, it’s not enforceable. 2. Interrupt the moment: Don’t wait for a performance review. Address it in real-time, firmly but without unnecessary escalation. 3. Normalise intervention: Make it a team responsibility. When everyone is empowered to call out behaviour that doesn't align with the values, the framework changes. Culture is built through your daily actions, not through memos. How are you choosing to show up when you see the line being crossed? 👉 podcast 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dSr7YigM #Leadership #AuthenticLeadership #Coaching #TeamDynamics #CultureBuilding #ProfessionalGrowth

Establishing a high-performing culture isn't a happy accident; it’s a deliberate design choice. I spent this morning at The Epic Malta Business panel discussion, "Looking Inside Out: How Strong Cultures Are Built," and the insights were as practical and thought provoking. As organizations scale, the "glue" that holds teams together often gets stretched—unless it’s reinforced with intentionality. Here are my three key takeaways on building an environment where excellence is sustained: 👉Culture Scales with Intention: You can’t rely on the "vibe" of a small team to survive rapid growth. Leadership must explicitly define and remind the behaviors they want to see, or the culture will be defined by the loudest voices in the room. 👉Trust is the Currency of Change: During periods of transition, alignment isn't about everyone agreeing—it’s about everyone trusting the "Why." High-performing environments prioritise transparency to maintain that alignment when the stakes are high. 👉Internal Culture as a Strategic Lever: We often look outward for competitive advantages, but the panel highlighted how a resilient internal culture is the ultimate strategic edge. It’s what allows a company to pivot faster and endure longer than the competition. Building a culture where people can truly thrive requires more than a mission statement on a wall; it requires a daily commitment to looking "inside out." Huge thanks to the panelists for the open dialogue and fresh perspectives.
