Having a rear screen is useful not just for selfies and notifications, but also if you want to display something that is always on (for example a clock or weather info or whatever your specific need is)

Dometalican, 16 Sep 2026I can think of 2: 1. Instead of AOD, that back screen ca... moreYeah, using it for selfies and vlogging is the obvious advantage although if you use the ultrawide there will be massive distortion of faces. Plus the ultrawide on all the Xiaomi 17 series was the worst ultrawide (as well as having the narrowest fOV) in any flagship phone so they need to update that sensor to make it more useful.

For the rear screen for other things I think the only genuine use might be if in meetings or something and the phone is face down on a table you can still see notifications. For most other things I can't see much point as you can just use the front screen for basically everything the rear screen does (and it is more private too). In practice on public transport I can't remember seeing people using the rear screen. You always see them facing the front of the screen and can see the screen at the back facing you.

I think it was Meizu who first came up with this rear screen idea, then nubia tried it but it just didn't catch on. I still think it's mostly a marketing gimmick. The question is will it still be on their phones in a few years time or will they abandon it like other brands did? My guess is they'll abandon it. It worked well as a sales point for the Xiaomi 17 pro series as nobody had tried it for a long time but the novelty factor is a big issue. Let's see how the sales of the 18 pro series goes though. Maybe I will be wrong and it will stay for the long term.

Caiomi copied Apple once again, but its unique at least, looks cool.

Only use I can see though is better quality selfies, people don't really look at the back of their phones.

Or maybe another use us you can you can do a dual tone color, change the color of your camera hump whenever you feel like it. Now that's a niche gimmick 😁

                    How uninnovative.

Aierlan, 16 Sep 2026A complete gimmick. Why not just use the front big screen r... moreI can think of 2:

                      1. Instead of AOD, that back screen can get you the notifications you need for messages, anyone calling (even use the same screen to silence the call without picking up the phone), and even setting timers (again, without picking up the phone).

                      2. 10x better selfies with even better Ultrawide selfies for friend groups or families.

May not be for everyone but that screen has its uses in the same way flippables have their niche carved.

They found a way to re-release a 2022 phone for 4 years, increase its price, and have record sails.

There's a very good reason Samsung is winning on all fronts this year. The competition is genuinely depleted of innovative ideas. In no reality would any person like to have an expensive phone showing ads or anything else to the surrounding.
