They've announced that they're winding down production of regular DDR RAM in favour of much more profitable HBM for data centres. It's greedy and sad, as they're dumping the consumer market into even bigger price gouging. But that is the reality we live in. Big Tech burning trillions on humongous, multistorey AI slop centres, as that is quick and easy money.

Has Samsung lost there marbles or something? Why in the world would Samsung want to use Micron's new LPDDR5X RAM when they manufacture there own RAM? It would save Samsung money to use there own RAM in the upcoming S27 Series instead of buying RAM from someone else.

S26+ can be had below 800 Eur and

If the numbers ar... moreThe memory is shared and used by the cpu, gpu and npu.
Thus its speed has noticeable effect on the games and AI.
If you don't play much with either then not only you don't need faster memory but cpu and even storage. In these cases you might aswell go for a cheaper model in general and not waste money ot the S series.

Kinda like how higher capacity silicon Carbon batteries are for some manufacturers on higher storage tier phones, but at least there you get an upgrade, but here with Samsung , there is no upgrade, it's what 2026 will have and Samsung doesn't want to use it.

Go for sub class tech, if only Chinese flagships came into US and Europe without 50% imports and actually sell in the US, Samsung would be screwed.

Leanzazzy, 16 Sep 2026At this point, companies should just stop releasing new pro... more2026 phones are meant to those with older phones like 2023, 2022, 2021 ...
People with 2025/2024 are not supposed to buy again and should not even think of doing..
Thank those ppl that cannot even write an e-mail without help from Chatgpt , Gemini or Claude. And those that use these software to make memes, " art" to attack politicians etc..
That's why a 16GB LPDDR6 for smartphones costs near $200.

Leanzazzy, 16 Sep 2026At this point, companies should just stop releasing new pro... moreI agree with this. Not only because, as you point out, it's getting more expensive to make these things, but also because we are kind of at a plateau now as far as technology is concerned. There are simply not enough changes or progress within 12 months to really get excited about. New processors, cameras, screens, radios, etc, all add up to an experience that's, let's be honest, largely the same at the end of the day 🤷♀️
This isn't just a Samsung or Apple problem either; even the Chinese OEMs, though often fawned over on this site and pushing ahead faster in certain hardware areas, are not exactly reinventing the wheel year on year. And since none of these companies are immune to rising component costs, they cannot avoid the pinch either.
The smartphone market has reached maturity, and seeing as we are only going to end up paying more for smaller and smaller improvements, and even some regressions, perhaps this is an industry that could consider slowing down a bit in terms of product cycles.

Question is: How important is lpddr6?
If the numbers are looking good it doesn't matter that much. What Samsung need to worry about is for the S27 to not have a big enough gap to the S26. Why pay the premium then?

Most importantly, they're providing much needed supply which is going to create a price war. Because eventually, the big three are going to have stock piling up and they'll have no way to get rid of it and cxmt (and other new companies)
are going to underbid them every single time.
