  • During World War II, George and Ksavera Zilinskas took Rita Frank as their foster daughter. Her mother, Lidija Frankienė, was Jewish, while her father, Jonas Frankas, was Lithuanian – an officer in the Lithuanian Army and the brother of Ksavera Zilinskas. After the Nazi occupation of Lithuania, doctors George and Ksavera lived in Vilnius. As repression intensified, Jonas asked his sister to take care of his daughter Rita and Lidija Frankienė, who was seriously ill, could no longer do that. Eventually, Rita was taken to her new adoptive parents and became Rita Žilinskaitė. The Zilinskas family also hid Rita’s 15-year-old cousin, Lėja Rosenfeld. She and her parents had been imprisoned in the Kaunas ghetto. Later, her parents were deported and killed at Stutthof and Buchenwald. Eventually, George Zilinskas managed to obtain new identity papers for Lėja and she got the name of Liucija Statkevičiūtė. During the summer of 1944, George and Ksavera, along with their foster daughters, decided to flee to the West - they first settled in Dresden, Germany. Just before the bombing of Dresden, they found themselves in Ravensburg along with other Lithuanian refugees, and later in Bremerhaven, where they reached the U.S. on the first refugee ship from Germany. Eventually, the orphans Rita and Liucija finished their studies and began a new life in America.

  • European External Action Service’s 4th annual report on Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI) threats is a reality check. 35% of mentioned FIMI operations are linked to specific countries - 29% are attributed to Russia, 6% to China, yet a large part of operations remains difficult to attribute due to complex networks of intermediaries. There were 540 incidents, 10 500 channels involved and 43 000 pieces of content. Ukraine stays the primary target in efforts to undermine international support and legitimacy. AI is becoming an integral part of FIMI - the mass "production" of text, image, and audio content, along the "poisoning" of large language models with false information to distort the outputs.
