We are partnering with a large, complex organization in the infrastructure/technology industry seeking an experienced payroll operations leader to oversee multi-state payroll functions. This is a highly visible leadership opportunity for someone who combines deep technical payroll expertise with strong operational leadership and change management capabilities. The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys building structure, improving processes, and driving execution in fast-paced environments. This role will play a key part in modernizing payroll operations, enhancing compliance practices, and leading system/process transformation initiatives while managing a team of payroll managers. This role requires an onsite presence in Pasadena.
Key Responsibilities:
• Lead end-to-end payroll operations across multiple states and employee groups
• Manage, mentor, and develop a team of payroll leaders
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations, including complex wage & hour laws
• Partner closely with HR, Finance, Operations, and executive stakeholders to improve workflows and operational efficiency
• Drive payroll process improvements and automation initiatives, including transitioning from manual to more streamlined systems
• Evaluate risk, troubleshoot issues, and implement practical, compliant solutions in real time
• Build strong cross-functional relationships to gain alignment and execute on strategic initiatives
Qualifications:
• 10+ years of progressive payroll operations experience, including union payroll environments
• 8+ years of leadership experience managing teams and driving accountability
• Strong understanding of multi-state payroll compliance and wage & hour laws
• Experience navigating both strategic planning and hands-on operational execution
• Prior involvement in payroll system implementations, upgrades, or process automation initiatives strongly preferred
• Experience with ERP/payroll platforms such as Oracle, JD Edwards, PeopleSoft, Rhumbix, or similar systems
• Strong communication skills with the ability to build trust and collaborate across all levels of an organization
• Proactive, solutions-oriented mindset with strong emotional intelligence and adaptability
