We combined the Twitter API, Node.js, PHP, and Redis on Heroku to keep a rolling 24-hour window into mentions of TV shows on Twitter. This allowed users of the XFINITY Facebook page to see what shows were popular at any given time, informing them of popular new, returning, or specific genre shows.

Back in 2011 I began a search for the web design firm we'd be using to help with the website redesign. After meeting with three groups, we decided to work with Happy Cog, who have been building great websites since 1999.

After this process, we began a quick discovery phase in January of 2012 to establish any stakeholder goals, design preferences, and audience prioritization.

Through the months of March, April, May, and June, I worked with the user experience team at Happy Cog to develop a sitemap and wireframes. Alongside this work was some content strategy planning, which ended in June with a big content workshop.

June and July were the visual design months, in which Happy Cog began with the homepage in three unique styles. A large presentation was held, and we brought together elements from each design for stakeholder approval.

After the initial design selection, Happy Cog moved on to design 3 groups of 4 pages each. We finished and approved these designs by the beginning of August.

This began the coding process. Happy Cog started with structural development, and wrote some very standards-compliant HTML5. After that, the presentation layer was put together using SASS/CSS and Codekit, a great utility for automatically compiling SASS. Finally, Javascript was added fo complete with the behavior layer.

After the initial templates were coded, from late August to November, I brought everything into ExpressionEngine and built up the CMS.

We launched the site, minus some functionality pushed back for later iterations, on November 4th, 2012. This was the largest project I've ever been part of, and it was a true honor working with the crew at Happy Cog. It was like going to grad school!

Gold: Pic Tap Toe, Allen & Gerritsen

When Boston agency Allen & Gerritsen acquired Philadelphia-based Neiman last year, its HR department devised a novel way for employees to get familiar with one another: a virtual game of tic-tac-toe using each office’s walls of nine digital TV displays and interconnected TTT boards using RFID technology to move the pieces on the other office’s walls. Participating employees allowed access to their Instagram accounts so they could learn about the people behind the other team’s moves. Though they got to know each other better, most games ended in a tie.
