Finance Committee Delegation of the Parliament of Finland Visits KAERI🇫🇮🤝🇰🇷👏 On March 11, 2026, a delegation from the Finance Committee of the Parliament of Finland visited KAERI to learn about Korea’s nuclear R&D and explore future cooperation. During the meeting, both sides discussed potential collaboration in areas such as advanced reactors, nuclear policy, and spent nuclear fuel management. The Finnish delegation shared updates on Finland’s nuclear power program, the Onkalo spent fuel repository, and plans to introduce SMRs for district heating. KAERI presented Korea’s nuclear R&D activities, including the development of SMART100, SFR, MSR, and HTGR. KAERI, a government-funded research institute established based on "the Act on the Establishment, Operation and Fostering of Government-funded Science and Technology Research Institutes," contributes to academic advancement, energy acquisition, and utilization of nuclear energy through active research and development in related fields. Since its establishment in 1959, KAERI has been the only research institute in Korea dedicated to research and technology development of nuclear energy. Over the past 60 years, it has concentrated its resources on the developments of nuclear technology and made significant achievements, including the localization of PHWR and PWR reactors, the design of a Nuclear Steam Supply System(NSSS) - applied to Uljin Units 3 & 4 - and the design and construction of the multi-purpose research reactor HANARO. As one of the leading nuclear science and technology in the world, KAERI is building a safe society centered on people and the environment. It will continue to expand into new fields, improving quality of life while attaining higher standards in safety and reliability.

🇸🇪🤝🇰🇷 Swedish Delegation Visits KAERI to Strengthen Nuclear R&D Cooperation On January 20, 2026, Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute | KAERI, led by President Han Gyu Joo, welcomed a Swedish delegation headed by Maja Lundbäck, State Secretary at the Ministry of Climate and Enterprise, together with H.E. Karl-Olof Andersson, Ambassador of Sweden to Korea. During the visit, KAERI shared insights into its ongoing R&D, including advanced reactor technologies such as SMART-100, i-SMR, HECTAR, SALUS, and MARINA, sparking strong interest from the Swedish side 🔬. The delegation also toured the HANARO research reactor and STELLA-2 facility. Discussions highlighted shared priorities in SMRs, Gen-IV reactors, and high-level radioactive waste disposal, reaffirming nuclear energy’s role in supporting carbon neutrality 🌍⚛️. 🇰🇷🤝🇺🇸 Strengthening U.S.–Korea Nuclear R&D Cooperation Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute | KAERI welcomed a high-level delegation from Argonne National Laboratory, marking an important step toward deeper cooperation in advanced nuclear science and technology. KAERI and the University of Missouri have signed a General Agreement to strengthen collaboration in nuclear R&D🥳👏 On October 27, 2025, Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute | KAERI and University of Missouri-Columbia signed a General Agreement in Daejeon, KAERI headquarters, to strengthen cooperation in nuclear R&D. The agreement builds on the existing partnership between the two institutions, including the NextGen University of Missouri Research Reactor - MURR® design studies, and establishes a framework for joint research and personnel exchange in six areas: reactor technology, advanced instrumentation, radioisotopes, neutron beam utilization, materials research, and advanced computing. The signing ceremony was attended by First Vice Minister HYUK-CHAE KOO of the Ministry of Science and ICT, President Han Gyu Joo of KAERI, Executive Vice President In-Cheol LIM of KAERI and President Mun Y. Choi of the University of Missouri, along with members of the Missouri delegation. Following the ceremony, the delegation visited KAERI’s major research facilities — HANARO, Cold Neutron Research Facility, Research Reactor Fuel Fabrication Facility, STELLA-2, and the Kijang Research Reactor (KJRR) construction site in Busan — gaining firsthand insight into KAERI’s technological capabilities. 🌏 KAERI x VINATOM: Strengthening Nuclear Cooperation On October 8, Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute | KAERI took part in the 16th Vietnam Conference on Nuclear Science and Technology (VINANST-16) in Da Nang, Vietnam.
