Lewa Digital Literacy is a technology capacity-building programme with the mandate of improving learning outcomes while promoting conservation. The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy has made significant progress in boosting digital literacy and integrating ICT into the curriculum across 27 supported schools. This directly supports Lewa’s goal of creating a thriving learning environment. Since the programme began,Lewa has been distributing interactive smart boards and computers, among other educational technology devices. The mission of The AI Policy Playbook is to translate global AI governance principles into actionable regional strategies — balancing innovation incentives with ethical safeguards and equitable access. By analyzing institutional readiness, data infrastructure, and policy maturity, the report situates AI not merely as a technological transformation, but as a political economy challenge demanding multi-stakeholder governance and cross-sector alignment. Quantitatively, the report highlights that less than 30% of African and 45% of Asian nations currently have formal AI strategies, yet both regions are projected to witness compound AI-driven GDP growth of 1.5–2.3% annually by 2030 if policy environments mature effectively. Investments in AI-related R&D have risen by over 40% in Asia since 2020, while Africa’s AI startup ecosystem has expanded by nearly 400% in the same period, reflecting exponential grassroots momentum despite infrastructural constraints. However, the digital divide remains pronounced — with average data readiness indices at 0.48 for Africa and 0.61 for Asia (on a 0–1 scale). The report further estimates that aligning regional AI policies with responsible innovation frameworks could generate $500 billion in additional economic value across both continents by 2035. Analytically, the study argues that effective AI governance in emerging markets depends on institutional adaptability, localized ethical frameworks, and collaborative data ecosystems. It advocates for “contextual policy intelligence” — a model emphasizing adaptive regulation, open data standards, and regional cooperation mechanisms modeled after the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and ASEAN digital accords. The convergence of digital infrastructure, education policy, and public-private partnerships emerges as a decisive factor in narrowing capacity gaps, while cross-border data governance is positioned as the linchpin for scalable AI deployment. Dear donor/s, please fund informal groups! The “must be registered” eligibility requirement in grants and funding opportunities is doing more harm than good. Hear me out—this criterion excludes community-based groups that are actively making an impact at the grassroots level. These groups rely on funding to sustain their work, yet they are locked out of critical financial support simply because they lack formal registration. The reality is that registering an organization is not easy, especially for grassroots groups and individuals working in social impact. Take Kenya, for example—excessive bureaucracies, high costs, and long, complicated processes make it incredibly difficult for small, community-led initiatives to gain official status. As a result, many groups doing crucial work remain ineligible for funding. Meanwhile, individuals who are not genuinely engaged in community work feel compelled to register organizations just to qualify for funding, despite having no real initiatives or impact on the ground. Another major downside of this system is the unnecessary duplication of efforts. Instead of collaborating with existing grassroots initiatives, many new organizations emerge simply because founders want control over funding. As a result, resources are fragmented, and many projects end up replicating work that is already being done. And while social impact can never be "too much," wouldn’t strategic collaboration be far more effective? This restrictive funding model has been normalized for too long—it’s time for a change!
