The Singaporean education system is built on FOMO: work hard, pay your dues, don’t screw up- and you’ll land your dream job. That formula worked when demand for tech talent exceeded supply. Today, it doesn’t. I hear this all the time from students: “But I interned at five global brands.” Or “I won three hackathons- why aren’t companies lining up to hire me?” The mindset is clear: stack more achievements, fix every gap, make the resume look flawless. 💪 But employers 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 hire flawless. We hire standout. A junior hire isn’t expected to be perfect. It’s far easier to teach stakeholder management, UAT, or user interviews than it is to teach someone to be exceptional. What’s much harder to fix is a lack of depth or a lack of clear strengths. And that’s the problem. “Perfect” resumes almost always struggle to go deep. The intern with five brand names couldn’t explain when agile isn’t suitable. The hackathon winner couldn’t describe how to approach finding product-market fit. 🤔 Do we 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 expect students to have that level of depth? Of course not. Depth takes experience and guidance. But the job market has changed- and that’s why the few students who 𝘥𝘰 develop it stand out so much. So instead of chasing flawlessness, find a good mentor and stick with them. Stay longer at that internship. Learn by doing, and by asking questions. You’ll hear the same advice for your first full-time job too. Because three ingredients are needed to truly grow: time, curiosity, and the right mentor. And after you do all that, write your resume to highlight growth and learning, not just achievements and flawlessness. Introducing Teen Accounts on Facebook and Messenger, improving safety for young users in Vietnam Starting this week, Teen Accounts are available on Facebook and Messenger in Vietnam. 🔒 Enhanced Protections for Teens + Restricted audience: Teen Accounts will default to “Friends” for who can see posts, stories, videos, and friend lists. + Restricted messaging: Messages are set at the highest protection level. Only friends or existing contacts can chat with teens. Messages from accounts with only a phone number will appear in the “message requests” folder. + Restricted sensitive content: Meta’s system will automatically remove sensitive or offensive content to ensure an age-appropriate experience. + Interaction limits: Posts in which teens are tagged must be reviewed and confirmed by them before appearing on their profile. + Time limits: Teens will receive reminders to log off after 60 minutes of daily use. + Sleep mode: From 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM, Facebook will automatically mute notifications so teens are not disturbed at night. 97% of users aged 13-15 keep the default protection settings, helping parents feel more confident about their children’s online safety 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Parental Supervision: Parents and guardians can use supervision tools to manage safety settings, approve requests to lower protection, and set time limits. They live off government grants. When the grant stops, so does the company. Why is it so hard for private investment to flow into Korean startups? Here are 4 critical reasons I’ve observed: 1. Risk-averse investment culture. Korean capital prefers safety. Investors often lean toward profitable SMEs, legacy sectors, or proven models - rather than bold bets or disruptive innovation. As a result, early-stage startups building for the future get overlooked. 2. Grant-optimized, not market-optimized. Startups chase government programs instead of product-market fit. Founders build pitch decks for grant panels, not for customers or investors. This leads to dependency and misalignment. And smart investors spot it right away. 3. IR without vision. In global markets, fundraising is not just about numbers - it’s about belief. Founders need to sell the future, not just explain the present. Too often, Korean IR decks lack urgency, or global vision that sparks investor conviction. 4. Narrow global exposure. Many founders and investors don’t have enough international context. They haven’t lived the pain points they’re trying to solve at a global scale. This makes it harder to build companies that attract capital beyond Korea.

Ever think about how those little black-and-white squares ended up running half our lives? The QR code wasn’t born in Silicon Valley or at a flashy startup. It came from a car parts factory in Japan, in 1994. Masahiro Hara and his team at Denso Wave were frustrated with clunky barcodes. They needed something faster, something that could carry more data. Inspiration came from the grid layout of the game Go. Unlike a barcode, a QR code could hold hundreds of times more information and still be read instantly, from any angle. What started as a clever fix for tracking auto parts slowly escaped the factory: → By the late ’90s, it became a global standard. → In the 2000s, it showed up on products, ads, and even train tickets. → And in 2020, it was everywhere: menus, payments, vaccine certificates. All from a grid of tiny squares. It is a reminder that the most transformative ideas do not arrive with fireworks.
