"Security isn't just a tech problem anymore—it's a GTM problem for startups, especially those eyeing enterprise partnerships." Last week, our Antler Japan Inception Residency startups gained invaluable insights from Fujitsu Launchpad on navigating the complex world of enterprise security. 3 key takeaways for founders: 1. #Trust is Paramount: Enterprises entrust startups with their most valuable assets: #customer data and critical operations. Building and maintaining this trust, backed by demonstrable security practices, is non-negotiable. As Alex put it, "The enterprise security questionnaire is an invitation to build trust, not just a checklist. Buyers want to minimize #risk to themselves and their organizations." 2. #Proactive Security from Day One: The digital landscape is unforgiving. Hackers are constantly monitoring new domains, ready to exploit vulnerabilities. Establish robust security foundations early, including using Identity Providers, separating environments, and creating an 'Evidence Folder' to document compliance and practices. You can't go back in history to prove what you've done. 3. #Compliance as a Strategic Advantage: Certifications like ISO 27001, SOC 2, or P-Mark aren't just badges; they're powerful signals of your commitment to security. They demonstrate that you've already met stringent compliance #standards, significantly easing the path to enterprise partnerships by minimizing perceived risk. Huge thanks to Javier M. and Alex Sayle from Fujitsu Launchpad for sharing these essential insights with our cohort! "You have Spotify for the ears. Netflix for the eyes. I wanted to make an entertainment for the mouth." This week at Antler Japan, we had the privilege of hosting Baku Morikuni, Founder & CEO of NOMU ENTERPRISE, for an incredibly raw and insightful Speaker Session. Baku’s journey is anything but conventional. Raised in Berlin to Japanese parents, he built a software startup before joining Sony. He later become the leader of Sony's Sports Entertainment subsidiary and later Managing Director of Hawk-Eye Innovations APAC. But the entrepreneurial itch never left. In 2024, he left the corporate giant to build NOMU ENTERPRISE—a food-tech startup redefining hydration with reusable cup-based personalized drink machine. His transition from a mega-corporation back to the trenches of early-stage building brought some hard-hitting truths for our founders: 1️⃣ At the earliest stage, #YOU are the product. No product, no traction — just conviction. Baku's first believers were angels, and they bet on him as a human being, not a deck. "If you don't convince as a human being, you won't get any investors." 2️⃣ A #VC in your round is more than capital — it's a multiplier. Baku deliberately included a VC alongside his angels — not just for capital, but for #access. That VC became the connector who opened doors to the rest of his seed round investors. One right relationship compounds. 3️⃣ Different investors ask different #questions — and that's the point. #Angels are founder-first: "Do I believe in you?" #CVCs are risk-first: "What could go wrong?" Neither is wrong. Having both in the room early gave Baku a sharper, more complete picture of his own company. 4️⃣ Your only edge over the giants is #SPEED. "Big name companies are disappearing because they are not taking risk." At NOMU ENTERPRISE, they ship every day. The biggest investment you make isn't money — it's your #time and #energy. Building a startup is a massive roller coaster. It requires absolute #conviction. Baku’s story is a testament to what happens when you combine relentless execution with a bold vision. Thank you, Baku Morikuni, for sharing your journey, your conviction, and your unvarnished advice with our cohort. #AntlerJapan #Startups #FounderJourney #VentureCapital #FoodTech #Innovation #Entrepreneurship #NOMU Florian Geier Kaito Nozawa Satomi Hoshi

"At ZooKeep, sales is a shared responsibility for the customer-facing team including myself." Earlier this week we had the honor of inviting Fuminori Gunji from ZooKeep to Antler Japan's office. We learned from his experiences — and walked away with some sharp, practical insights for early-stage founders navigating #GTM in #Japan. 1️⃣On selling to large enterprises — lead with #FOMO, not features: Large enterprises move slowly, but they fear being left behind. When pitching, don't just sell your product — show them what happens when companies fail to innovate. Real case studies of stagnation hit harder than any feature list. Then show them what their competitors are already doing. And if those competitors are already working with you? That's your most persuasive proof point in the room. 2️⃣On getting your first #customer: Hire people who already have relationships with your potential clients. The best early sales conversations don't feel like sales at all — they're warm introductions where you get the chance to talk about yourself and your product naturally, without the pressure of a cold pitch. 3️⃣On what that first #hire actually looks like: Expect them to wear multiple hats. In the early days, your salesperson will also be doing customer support. And in Japan, customer support is almost like a feature - critical for BtoB sales. Thank you Fuminori san for sharing your insightful experience with us. #Antler #VC #startup Florian Geier Kaito Nozawa Satomi Hoshi

18 teams. 10+ countries. One shared ambition. Today, the next wave of promising #founders building from Japan came together at Antler Japan to begin their 6-week journey. It won't be an easy ride. It will be a sprint filled with unfiltered questions, brutally honest feedback, and relentless execution. They've already shown us a strong start, and we're excited to see what they build. What was the first piece of thought shared by Florian Geier? "Fall in love with the #problem, not the solution." You need to know your customers better than anyone else. What's keeping them up at night? Or are they simply not troubled enough to look for a solution? Forgetting this fundamental truth is one of the top reasons startups fail. Then came the ultimate question: "Why #you?" There are plenty of smart people in the world. Many of them might be solving the exact same problem as you, just in different ways. So ask yourself: What is your unfair advantage? Six weeks to find out. We're here for every step of it. Welcome to Antler Japan. Kaito Nozawa Satomi Hoshi Florian Geier

New trend: Some of the best founders are relocating for focus. On May 11, we kick off our next 6-week Inception Residency in Antler Japan. Founders are flying in from around the world to build with us, leveraging our advantages of having boots on the ground. We have teams building across cybersecurity, entertainment, physical AI, and biotech. From the last 4-week workshops held in Japan, we are already seeing what a high-signal cohort looks like. Six weeks, designed to be intense while helping founders lock in to the goals they set out to achieve: pressure-test their initial validation, complete their MVPs, and get real introductions to networks that help them leap forward. With the government pushing a ¥10 trillion startup plan and expanding public procurement for new tech, more founders and more capital are flowing into Tokyo than ever before. We only have a few last-minute spots left. If you want 6 weeks focusing on only the things that matter for your venture, step in now.

"Products change. But as Antler we continue to back the founders - the most driven ones that go further, faster." These were the first words by Florian Geier at a joint speaker panel hosted by JETRO - Japan External Trade Organization and ERIA. Topics touched on the landscape of investments and collaborations across #SoutheastAsia, #India and #Japan. So...what did Florian Geier have to say to #EarlyStageStartups looking to enter Japan? Having experienced both sides of the corporate/startup discussion table, he touched on two things: #Timing "Think really hard about the TIMING you want to come to Japan, and understand the timing it takes to do market entry here because as a startup you're EXTREMELY resource constrainted." #LocalPartners "It's good to work closely with somebody on the ground here in Japan that understands how to map out the stakeholders; how to hit the right buttons; how to actually convince them to unlock things. Because large Japanese corporates often don't want to take the risks of going too fast. They want to know why your solution is not going to fail." It was a pleasure for us to present Florian Geier alongside Irawan Ganda, Rohan Chhatwal, and Beatrix Lungidita D. Kaito Nozawa Hiro Kiga Satomi Hoshi Antler Japan #investment #VC #startups
