✨ OUR LATEST RESEARCH IS OUT IN IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON INDUSTRY APPLICATIONS! 🎉 I am excited to share our latest research, where we tackled one of the hardest-to-abate sectors: steelmaking. 📄  Title: Decarbonization of Steel Mills: How to Set-up an Effective Allocation of Energy Flows, Aiming at Tracking Efficiency and Energy Savings Assisted with Machine Learning Tools - With the steel industry contributing approximately 8% of global CO₂ emissions and requiring reduction to meet 2050 net-zero targets every efficiency gain matters. 🏭 What we did! We implemented ISO 50001 across three real-world steel mills (2 in Italy, 1 in the USA) and combined it with machine learning to systematically track energy flows and identify savings opportunities. 🔥 Key Impact Highlights 🏭 ISO 50001provides a scalable framework to pinpoint energy‑significant areas, from steelmaking to auxiliary systems like compressed air. 📊 Energy Performance Indicators(toe/t and €/t) enabled consistent tracking and cross‑mill benchmarking. 🤖 Support Vector Machine (SVM) outperformed six other ML algorithms (LR, Tree, Ensemble, GPR, NN, Kernel) across all error metrics for predicting compressed air energy consumption. 🌱 Real World Impact Combined interventions across the three mills can avoid up to 6.1 kt CO₂/year, with identified savings reaching €0.98M/year per mill. 📈 Granularity matters – monthly and daily data significantly sharpen predictive accuracy and anomaly detection compared to annual baselines. ⚠️ The honest truth Data availability, limited sensor coverage, and the need for finer temporal resolution are still barriers to fully unlocking ML’s potential in heavy industry. 📖 DOI: 10.1109/TIA.2026.3675999 Early access: https://lnkd.in/dT2sz9Yh Huge thanks to my incredible co-authors ,this work wouldn’t exist without you:   👨🎓 Nouman Ahmed (University of Pavia & IUSS Pavia ,Italy)   🧑🏫 Prof. Norma Anglani ( University of Pavia Italy)   👨💼 Ing. This list includes professionals appointed to support the ARERA - Autorità di Regolazione per Energia Reti e Ambiente in the technical evaluation of electricity and gas infrastructure development plans — a key activity to ensure transparency, robustness of cost-benefit analyses, and high-quality decision-making in the energy sector. Few days ago, we successfully concluded the research project carried out in collaboration between the Integrated Photonics and Microelectronics groups at the University of Pavia - Department of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering and Nokia Italy, within the framework of the PNRR Triboletto project (Fondazione RESTART Extended Partnership). The research concluded with a series of stimulating measurements and significant results in the field of Radio-over-Fiber (RoF) transmissions. Specifically, this collaboration brought together our expertise in photonics and microelectronics with Nokia’s expertise in radio transmission, allowing us to experimentally validate a RoF link (in the photo you can observe the detection of a 4096-QAM constellation). The meeting also represented a valuable opportunity to discuss and define possible future developments and new shared research directions. Last week I had the pleasure of joining the Winter PhD School organized by the DhealCom Project on “Diabetes technologies: from Artificial Pancreas to Diabetes management” as a speaker for an intensive, hands-on week on “Glucose Prediction Challenge” with prof. Eleonora Aiello. It was an incredibly stimulating experience to work closely with talented PhD candidates from different backgrounds and to support them. Throughout the week, the program covered topics from measurement technologies and glucose sensors, to machine learning and predictive models in diabetes, telemedicine interventions and safety in next-generation artificial pancreas systems. Thanks to the University of Pavia and the DhealCom Project for the organisation and hospitality. Thanks to my professors for trust and opportunity, to all the speakers for their contributions, and to all the participants for their energy, curiosity, and engagement.
