Traceability Matrix in QA — Ensuring No Requirement Is Left Untested In software testing, the Traceability Matrix (TM), also known as the Requirement Traceability Matrix (RTM), ensures that every requirement is properly validated and linked to its corresponding test cases. It serves as a vital QA tool that maps requirements, test cases, and defects to guarantee that no requirement is left untested. What Is a Traceability Matrix A Traceability Matrix is a structured table that links each requirement with its related test cases, helping ensure every requirement is verified through testing. It gives complete visibility between the Software Requirements Specification (SRS) and the Test Design Specification, allowing QA teams to identify coverage gaps early. Example: If requirement REQ-101 states “Allow user login with valid credentials,” the Traceability Matrix will link it to test cases like TC-001 and TC-002 that validate login success and error handling.
