India’s factory output index reflected a spurt in "consumer durables" production during September, due to pent-up demand caused by GST cuts announced during the same month, say economists. But some feel this is a temporary rise, and from January 2026 onwards, the impact of tax cuts on stimulating consumption, and thereby growth would fade. According to the IIP data, released on October 28, the year-on-year output growth of consumer durables (carrying a weight of 12.8 percent in IIP), rose to a 10-month high of 10.2 percent in September 2025. In the current IIP series, with base year 2011-12, this is only the second time September month recorded consumer durables production growth at a rate above 10 percent. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR): Current Status and Pathways for Reform CSR in India has immense potential to drive equitable and sustainable development, yet its impact remains uneven. Manufacturing companies, especially in rural and semi-urban areas, face direct pressure from local authorities and communities, and thus maintain active CSR teams or foundations. Their interventions are structured and visible. In contrast, trading, service, and financial sectors experience limited pressure. Many contribute only as a formality, and without transparent frameworks, their potential impact remains untapped. A key challenge is geography. Companies often spend CSR funds in urban or showcase projects, leaving rural and backward areas underserved. This undermines the very purpose of CSR: inclusive growth. Reforms are needed: Advance declaration of CSR areas and budgets to enable local authorities to monitor and align projects with real needs. Stricter NGO compliance: cap administrative expenses at 5–10%, mandate social and financial audits, and fund only NGOs with proven track records. Sector-specific approaches: manufacturing through own foundations, others via pooled CSR funds or credible NGOs. With accountability, transparency, and structured planning, CSR can evolve from a statutory obligation into a strategic tool for national development, bridging corporate resources with community needs and creating measurable impact across India.

The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) has flagged serious shortcomings in the maintenance of trains under South Central Railway (SCR).
