India’s Global Capability Center (GCC) landscape is undergoing a remarkable transformation, and it’s the mid-market GCCs that are leading this quiet revolution. Momentum Like Never Before Over 480 mid-market GCCs now operate across India, employing more than 210,000 professionals and representing 27% of the country’s entire GCC ecosystem. The pace is staggering: 35% of these centers have been established in just the last two years, contributing 30% of all new GCC units in that period. Why Are Mid-Market GCCs So Impactful? Innovation at the Core: These centers are 1.3x more likely to be transformation hubs and mature 1.2x faster than larger peers. Deep-Tech Talent Magnet: India now houses 47% of global product management talent and 25% of deep-tech roles for mid-market GCCs, making it a true hub for AI, cloud, cybersecurity, and data science. End-to-End Ownership: Nearly 60% of product and platform responsibilities in enterprise portfolios are managed from Indian mid-market GCCs. Strategic Influence: Over 80% of these centers are setting hiring, performance, and culture benchmarks for their global organizations. Smart, Agile, and Everywhere These GCCs are rewriting the playbook and not just following it. Their lean, agile teams operate with a start-up mindset, driving innovation and influencing policy. Companies like Planview, Flexera, and Bazaarvoice are living proof. These are not back offices anymore but global innovation labs. Growth is spreading beyond Bengaluru to Pune, Hyderabad, and emerging hubs like Chennai, with mid-market firms finding competitive advantages outside traditional metros. The Road Ahead With 130,000–150,000 mid-market companies globally, India is poised to attract 30,000–40,000 more GCCs in the coming years, especially from the US, UK, Germany, and Japan. If nurtured right, these centers could become AI-native innovation hubs, spinning off IP, shaping policy, and driving global transformation. What a refreshingly open and engaging conversation we had at the last Hangar DX "off-the-record session" for 2025 this morning. Definitely worth getting up early on a Saturday for - thanks again for hosting and inviting me, Ankit Jain! One thought in particular has been swirling around in my head since we dropped off Zoom: is AI causing the collapse of the four Staff+ archetypes that Will Larson wrote about in his fantastic book, Staff Engineer (which honestly changed my life)? Architect. Tech lead. Solver. Right hand. Will is very clear that most Staff+ engineers are some blend of all four. Very few of us are a pure archetype. But with AI in the mix, it feels like those distinctions might be starting to collapse in a new way. If AI amplifies our reach across architecture, execution, communication and influence, what happens to those archetypes? Do we still experience them as distinct patterns, or are we drifting towards a new kind of Staff+ generalist who is expected to be all four, all the time? It mirrors what I keep seeing in software engineering more broadly: years of specialisation might now be followed by a period of quiet "re-generalisation", as AI takes some of the load off the narrow craft and shifts the focus back to how we connect dots across the system. I do not have a neat answer, but I love the question: if the Staff+ archetypes are collapsing, what should replace them, if anything? And a slightly cheeky part of me does wonder if this is the moment for a "post-AI" edition of Staff Engineer, Will Larson 👀😄
