Wikipedia, AI, and the economics of open knowledge For over 25 years, Wikipedia has served as the world’s shared knowledge layer - and a foundational resource for modern AI systems. With 66+ million articles across 342 languages, Wikipedia is deeply embedded not just in #AItraining workflows, but also in live #AIpoweredsearch and research tools. As #generativeAI adoption scales, this usage has significantly increased infrastructure load on the platform. In response, the #WikimediaFoundation has formalised partnerships with companies including #Microsoft, #Meta, #Amazon, #Perplexity, and #MistralAI. The objective is sustainability - not restricting access or monetising content. As our Chintan Parikh, AI Researcher, explains: "Since Wikipedia is open source, everyone uses it as the knowledge of the whole world. It has long been the default dataset for NLU tasks and LLMs - free for humans and free for AI. Contributions from large platforms are primarily intended to support the operational scale created by AI-driven usage, without impacting startups or researchers."
