𝗟𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀. 𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹 𝗮 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲. Spent the last couple of days running a workshop with the Sales team of a SaaS client - and as always, walking out of that room, something shifts in me too. Over the years, one question consistently lights up the room in these sessions: 𝗜𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲? The debate gets spirited. But here's the perspective shift we work hard to create - it's both, and the sequence matters. Master the Science - the frameworks, the process, the psychology of buying - and the Art begins to flow naturally. You can't paint beautifully on a blank canvas if you don't understand light, form, and structure first. A few things I've come to believe after running hundreds of these sessions: 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀, 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗿 𝗻𝗼𝘁. If you can't sell an idea internally, rally a team around a vision, or move a stakeholder to act, the title on your business card won't save you. Influence and persuasion aren't "sales skills." They're leadership skills. 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀. The ones who show up after hearing No after No - with the same energy, the same belief - those are the people who've earned real respect. Resilience isn't built in comfort. It's built in the field. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵. Every session, I find myself practising what I share - almost unconsciously. That's the real reason the numbers move after these workshops. Teaching is the highest form of learning. And on ROI? In Sales, we don't wrestle with that question for long. The numbers don't lie. They never have. Win rates improve. Conversations sharpen. Numbers begin to move. We often think teams avoid accountability because they are "𝗹𝗮𝘇𝘆" or "𝗮𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸." But it’s rarely about the work. The real culprit? 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘁. Most leaders try to "enforce" accountability as a rule. They put it in the employee handbook and hope for the best. But you can’t mandate a culture of ownership. 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲; 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝘆-𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗱𝘆𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰. To get there, you must build the foundation first: • Collaboration: Do we actually know how to work together? • Ownership: Do we feel a personal stake in the outcome? • Accountability: This happens naturally when the first two are in place. If your team is struggling with "Accountability," stop looking at the results and start looking at the culture. Over the past few months, while designing our Deep Blue simulation, one insight kept surfacing: • Incremental growth is a strategy shift. • Exponential growth is a mindset shift. Teams are exceptionally good at optimising what exists. Very few are willing to challenge the invisible assumptions limiting what’s possible. Every time Devendra Naik and I facilitate Deep Blue, the same pattern emerges- It’s not the market that’s the constraint. It’s the 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 leaders have normalised. What was being signed here wasn’t a celebration of power. It was a framework to limit it. The Constitution didn’t promise an easy nation to govern or live in. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀 𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗰𝗸 𝗺𝗶𝗱-𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲? Change rarely happens in one leap. It usually moves in stages - just like this visual shows. Teams often begin by holding on to what feels familiar. Then they start sensing that something in the environment has shifted. Decisions get made, but not always fast enough. Ownership is shared gradually. Learning happens. Iteration follows. And only then does real growth start to show.
