Set within a 109-acre ecological terrain, Dakshana Valley Institute is guided by a clear intent: enabling learning to grow in continuity with the landscape, rather than at its expense. Vegetation, natural water channels, reservoirs and contours become primary design drivers, shaping a campus that limits intervention, reduces cut and fill, and preserves the ecological character of the site. Built form is calibrated to terrain, with larger academic and gathering spaces placed along gentler gradients, and residential modules adapted to steeper slopes. This allows the architecture to sit lightly within the landscape while creating shaded courts, outdoor learning spaces and areas for community interaction. Passive design strategies such as orientation, cross ventilation, solar shading, thermal banking and vegetation-led microclimate creation reduce heat gain and enhance everyday comfort. The campus is designed for daylight, ventilation and a reduced perceptible temperature, making sustainability integral to lived experience. Envisioned as a net-zero-ready ecosystem, the campus integrates solar potential, rainwater harvesting, natural reservoirs and low-energy design strategies. Its material palette draws from the region, using brick, basalt, stone, terracotta, wood and local craft references to create an architecture rooted in place. At Dakshana Valley Institute, sustainability is not an overlay. It is the framework through which ecology, education and community come together to shape a resilient campus that learns from the land. Crafting Light: The Art of Brick Jaali Exploring design iteration for a Brick Jali to optimize sunset interaction for a west-facing courtyard. The dynamic patterns with varied perforation allows a playful blend of light & shadow. The embedded lighting enhances the courtyard experience by activating it as an adaptable interactive space. Behind every Morphogenesis project is a process that is as layered as the architecture itself. It begins with observation, understanding the site, the climate, the client, the community, and the everyday rituals a space must support. From there, ideas move through many hands and minds: drawings are studied, layouts are questioned, material palettes are tested, details are debated, and each decision is refined until it serves a larger purpose. These moments from the studio capture that quiet but critical stage of design where intent becomes clarity. A plan becomes a conversation. A material sample becomes a performance choice. A detail becomes the difference between a space that simply exists and one that truly works. At Morphogenesis, design is never treated as a single gesture or a fixed aesthetic. It is a collaborative, research-led and context-driven process shaped by architects, designers, engineers, consultants and clients working together to create spaces that are efficient, resilient, beautiful and deeply responsive. We design to solve for climate, comfort, culture, constructability and long-term value. Every discussion, every sketch, every review and every revision is part of that commitment: to create architecture that is not only visually compelling, but meaningful, measurable and built to endure. Because great design is rarely born in isolation. It is developed through dialogue, strengthened by rigour, and brought to life through the collective intelligence of a team. Anand Residence is conceived as a seamless continuation of the existing home, rather than an addition. Set beside the main house, the new block extends the residence through the lens of SOUL©, where sustainability, optimisation, uniqueness and liveability shape both spatial experience and environmental response. The section reveals the depth of this intent: a triple-height sculpture court, a sunken microclimate court, and reinterpreted jaalis that filter light, enable airflow and preserve privacy. The conceptual plan completes the narrative through a strong physical and visual axis, stitching together entry, arrival and private courts into one cohesive residential experience. The ITC Green Centre, Kolkata reimagines the contemporary workplace through climate, craft, and cultural memory. Moving away from the anonymous glass office, the campus brings together sandstone façades, shaded public realms, and season-inspired landscapes to create an environment that is both performative and expressive. Narratives of Bengal’s rivers, festivals, and everyday life are etched into the built form, translating local identity into architecture at an urban scale, while collaborative processes with artists and artisans embed craft into construction. A workplace where climate responsiveness, cultural continuity, and spatial experience are deeply intertwined. Thank you Dezeen for covering it in such a nuanced and thoughtful way. ITC Green Centre, Kolkata wins the Chicago Athenaeum’s Green Good Design Award 2026. A 17-acre mixed-use campus in Rajarhat, Kolkata, conceived as an urban anchor with IT and corporate offices, a hotel, knowledge centre, and residential towers. Rooted in Bengal’s climate and cultural context, the campus is oriented 18° off the east-west axis to reduce solar exposure by about 25%, while shaded courts, southern breezes, and a protected pedestrian spine lower perceived temperatures by up to 5°C. High-performance office floors achieve over 85% space efficiency, with 17 m deep floor plates and about 90% naturally daylit workspaces. Radiant cooling, passive design strategies, and an energy target of 43 kWh/sq m/yr support its IGBC Platinum pre-certification. A climate-responsive, culturally rooted urban campus where optimisation, sustainability, liveability, and Bengal’s identity come together at scale.
