For the last few months, I have been closely observing the sudden rise of “AI-enabled Lean Six Sigma” programs across the market. Almost overnight, every second provider appears to be talking about: AI-powered Six Sigma, AI Green Belt, AI Black Belt, AI-driven DMAIC, and ChatGPT-integrated operational excellence. To be fair, some level of evolution is absolutely necessary. Operations are changing. Manufacturing is becoming increasingly data-intensive. Predictive maintenance is real. Anomaly detection is real. AI-assisted analytics is real. Real-time process intelligence is real. So the integration itself is not the problem. The problem is the growing superficiality with which the market is approaching it. In many cases, “AI-enabled Six Sigma” simply means: adding a ChatGPT module, teaching a few prompts, generating Fishbone diagrams through AI, and rebranding traditional courseware. That is not transformation. And more importantly, that is not what will create serious operational excellence professionals. One thing needs to be said very clearly: Nothing can replace the traditional Lean Six Sigma Body of Knowledge. Because ultimately, it is the foundational Six Sigma discipline that prepares professionals to: challenge assumptions, validate statistical conclusions, distinguish correlation from causation, identify unstable processes, and make responsible business decisions. AI can accelerate analysis. AI can identify patterns. AI can assist interpretation. But AI cannot replace operational judgement. At least not in any serious industrial environment. And frankly, another reality is that there are still very limited experts in the market today who are genuinely strong in both: Lean Six Sigma, and Artificial Intelligence. Most operational excellence experts are still learning AI. Most AI professionals still do not deeply understand process improvement and statistical thinking. Yet the market has already started jumping onto the bandwagon. That is why we are seeing so much forced integration. Personally, I do not believe the future is “AI replacing Six Sigma”. Nor do I believe organizations should continue teaching operational excellence exactly the way it was taught fifteen years ago. The future, in my view, belongs to: expert-led learning, strong statistical thinking, real process understanding, and intelligent use of AI as an enhancement layer. Not as a replacement for thinking itself. The real question is no longer: “Can someone pass a certification exam?” The real question is: “Can someone solve modern operational problems in increasingly intelligent business environments?” That requires much more than AI prompts.
