    There was something in the conference air (real, the kind humans breathe, at least for now) at the Procurement Leaders | A World 50 Group Community World Procurement Congress in London last week. More and more CPOs and procurement execs, it seems, want to know what AI coworkers are and how they interact with existing teams and tech stacks. Hint: they're something entirely new, but they work in your environment, vs. expecting you to cross over into theirs. It all started when we hosted our first session at WPC's "pre-conference" AI Forum, with our friend Eyal Nevo, exploring what it means to move beyond agentic AI to truly autonomous AI. While in a workshop with an intimate group of CPOs, one remarked (when asked) what he wanted digital coworkers to take on in his org: "everything." The conversations didn't stop there. Dozens of booth meetings and in-between-session exchanges hammered home that the market is ready -- more than that, the market "wants" -- new digital arms and legs today. Thank you to everyone who joined our session and stopped by the booth. We're excited that you are as excited as we are about where this is all going.     Meet the Agent Operator: Procurement's New (Human) Rising Star The year is 2030. Everyone is a bit richer, thinner, and better looking. And every P&L and balance sheet around the world looks a bit more robust, with less padding (i.e., insulation for the winter). What's happened to get to this point? If you guessed procurement was the protagonist in this utopian novel, you'd be right. But it wasn't the jobs in procurement (or the merchandising function in retail) that we've come to think of in the past that got us to this point. Granted, there are still quite a few category managers and sourcing specialists in the world around us in 2030 -- the best of the best. But the difference in creating this performance nirvana came from a role that only began in 2026: the Procurement Agent Operator. The Procurement Agent Operator, who typically earns a salary well above what sourcing managers pulled down in the past, doesn't haggle with suppliers, triage internal spend stakeholders, or wrangle legal to get contracts in place across a dozen logins to various source-to-pay legacy systems, all in the same day. No, the Procurement Agent Operator is: - Part data curator that decides what an AI employee gets to see  - Part orchestrator who sets thresholds, sequences workflows, and routes outputs - Part integration specialists (who speaks in MCP more fluently than her native tongue)  - Part tech selector (choosing which AI employees and agents to deploy, bench, or pit against each other)  - Part quality controller that kills the technically optimal but politically unwise calls before they hit a supplier - Part translator who turns AI output into something a CFO will actually act on - Part strategist who knows when to let the AI write the script. And of course, when to grab the pen. AI Employees still need their human owners. The Procurement Agent Operator is that owner. But she’s less a doer of procurement and more a conductor. And, of course, the one who occasionally reminds the garage band of humanity that while the algorithm wrote the code and got the outcome, the only audience that actually matters -- customers, suppliers, shareholders, and even those cold and calculated CFOs -- is DNA-based.     We were honored to host Ambassador Ian and Deputy Chief of Mission Desmond Lim from the Embassy of the Republic of Singapore in Tel Aviv at our Gain HQ this week. We walked them through what we're building — AI Employees for procurement, merchandising, and supply chain teams — and had a great conversation about how Israeli innovation can connect into the APAC market. Singapore has long been one of the world's most forward-thinking hubs for technology and trade, so it means a lot to have the embassy take an interest in what we're doing this early on.     "AI employees represent an emerging shift from digital tools to autonomous commercial operators." This line from James Rothwell's new IGD (Institute of Grocery Distribution) piece is the clearest framing we've seen of what's actually changing in retail buying right now. Not better software. A different kind of operator. The article gets into where the split makes sense, AI handling the long tail and chunks of the torso, humans staying on strategic negotiations and supplier partnerships. It also lands on the part most people skip: governance and evaluation frameworks are what separate AI that compounds value from AI that just compounds inefficiency.
