Dublin City University has enjoyed great success in the Research Ireland Government of Ireland Postdoctoral and Postgraduate Scholarships call with 27 postgraduate scholarships and 5 postdoctoral scholarships. These awards are worth almost €3.3million in funding to the University. The Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme aims to support applicants to pursue a postdoctoral fellowship for either one or two years. The successful applicants from DCU are among 244 postgraduate scholars and 97 postdoctoral fellows across 16 higher education institutions and research performing organisations. https://lnkd.in/dNEgvJf6

Researchers from Dublin City University, Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin will use newly awarded funding of €670,000 from Enterprise Ireland’s Commercialisation Fund to develop a breakthrough blood-based screening test for bowel cancer (colorectal cancer, CRC). The team, working with clinicians at St. Vincent’s University Hospital, seeks to transform cancer outcomes by moving screening away from invasive or unpleasant methods to their simple, high-accuracy blood test, named “CASPDx CRC”. Dr Paul Leonard from the School of Biotechnology will work alongside Scientific Lead Dr Emma Creagh from Trinity College Dublin, Commercial Lead Dr Kieran Clarke, and Prof Glen Doherty from St Vincent's Hospital. https://lnkd.in/dZte9W4N

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has today announced the appointments to its new Scientific Committee which will provide expert scientific advice on food safety and nutrition. I am very happy to have been selected to serve with this expert group and support the important work of the FSAI. Great to see this milestone announced by the Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment for the OsStic™ biomimetic bone adhesive programme. The work coming out of Dublin City University in collaboration with PBC Biomed and Dolmen Design and Innovation has now progressed to a first-in-human clinical investigation, following MHRA approval. The study will evaluate OsStic™ in tibial plateau fracture fixation at Leeds University Teaching Hospital. This project has been supported through the €3.4m Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund (#DTIF) and aims to develop a biomimetic adhesive that bonds bone rapidly and is gradually replaced by the patient’s own bone during healing. Congratulations in particular to Nicholas Dunne and the wider team involved in bringing this research from lab to clinic. It is an excellent example of collaboration between academia, industry and design partners to translate advanced biomaterials research into real clinical impact.
