Cross-border payments are often discussed in terms of speed and convenience. But making payments faster across borders is only part of the story. As cross-border transactions become part of everyday life, many initiatives across ASEAN focus on technology and payment connectivity. Yet technology alone cannot unlock the full potential of cross-border payments as a driver of regional growth. The real challenge lies in the layers behind the technology: regulatory alignment, consumer protection, and trust between jurisdictions. Without stronger governance alignment, payment connectivity may remain superficial, improving transaction convenience without necessarily delivering deeper economic integration.
