What is Credentialing?

Credentialing is an umbrella term used to refer to concepts such as professional certification, certificate programs, accreditation, licensure, and regulation.

• A certification program is designed to test the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform a particular job, and, upon successfully passing a certification exam, to represent a declaration of a particular individual’s professional competence.  In some professions, certification is a requirement for employment or practice.
• Similarly, licensure tests an individual’s competence but is a mandatory process by which the government grants time-limited permission for that licensed individual to practice his or her profession.
• In contrast to certification and licensure, an assessment-based certificate program is an educational or training program that is used to teach learning objectives and assess whether those objectives were achieved by the student.
• Accreditation is the process by which a credentialing or educational program is evaluated against defined standards and is awarded recognition if it is in compliance with those standards.

Who verifies the IBCCES credentials?

• IBCCES credentials are governed and approved by our professional board, which frequently reviews all policies and procedures of the IBCCES. The board is composed of a variety of specialists and experts, including clinical experts, therapists, special education professionals, and autistic self-advocates.
• The IBCCES is a proud member of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence, as well as the Better Business Bureau.

What is the value in becoming certified?

• Recognition for voluntarily meeting standards beyond professional and regional licensing requirements.
• Enhancement of reputation and credibility
• Listing on the online public registry of professionals

How is a CAS or other IBCCES program different from a university degree program?

A University degree or certificate is proof that you have completed a course or group of courses once. IBCCES certifications are focused on specific competencies, come from a multi-disciplinary approach, and require renewal periodically to maintain continuous learning.

How is the CAS different from a BCBA credential?

The BCBA is an ABA-specific credential provided through the BACB. The CAS is autism specific and can also serve as a supplemental certification. For example, many BCBAs, therapists, and other professionals choose to also receive their CAS to demonstrate their commitment to autism.

Will the CAS or other IBCCES credentials allow me to bill insurance for services, diagnose autism, or enable me to practice medicine?

Each professional should verify the insurance coverage policy guidelines in their area prior to any service. States/countries vary. Typically, only licensed professionals are eligible to bill insurance under the law. The CAS designation has been approved in some states for specific service provision, but this varies widely, and the CAS (or any IBCCES credential) alone does not automatically enable practitioners to bill for services, nor does it enable professionals to medically diagnose individuals. IBCCES credentials alone do not qualify individuals to practice medicine or provide medical intervention.

What job can I get with this certification?

IBCCES does not guarantee employment or specific job roles; however, many professionals utilize IBCCES credentials on their professional resume to assist them in standing out among other applicants.

Can I upgrade my certification?

Most credentials can be upgraded if your experience in the field or educational level changes. You can upgrade your credential by logging in to your profile and clicking the Upgrade button. I am currently working on my Master’s/Bachelor’s degree. Can I apply?

If you do not currently meet the educational and experience requirements for a certification, there is likely a related program that you would qualify for. For example, if you do not yet meet the requirements for the Certified Autism Specialist, you would likely qualify for the Autism Certificate. Contact IBCCES if you would like clarification on which certification best fits your needs.

What is the process for renewing my certification?

You can review our full renewal policies here. Your renewal can be processed directly through your IBCCES profile by clicking the “renew” button.  application. Along with the renewal fee, recent CEs in the program competency areas are required – some programs include these CEs as part of the renewal through IBCCES, and some you can purchase renewal CEs for a small fee at the time of renewal if needed. Please contact us if you need additional details.

Once I register to begin my certification program, how long do I have to complete the training and exam?

You will have to complete the coursework and final exam within 60 days.

Is the online learning available on demand?

Yes, the IBCCES learning management system is available 24/7 and is accessible as long as you have internet access. Once you have registered and paid for your program, you will be able to access the training modules online.

When do the courses start?

Once you register and pay for your program, you will have access to your online profile and application. You then have 60 days to access the online training, complete your profile and application details, pass the exam, and submit for approval. If you are requesting approved CEs for licensure, such as ASHA and AOTA-approved modules, please ensure to let us know at the time of registration – access to these modules may take 2-3 business days for implementation.

How are the online programs set up? What can I expect?

IBCCES programs are designed to be delivered online in a modular format. Content includes written and video formats, with captioning available for all programs. Programs also include periodic knowledge checks as well as a final exam. You are able to attempt the exam multiple times without penalty, but must pass the exam to complete your program. **If you need specific accommodations or support during your program, please contact Customer Support directly.

After I complete my final exam and submit my application, how long will it be before I get my certification?

Upon board approval, your certification packet will be prepared within 2-3 weeks. Once approved, you will have immediate access to the digital copy of your certificate and badge.

What is a Certified Autism Center™ (CAC)?

A Certified Autism Center (CAC) is a facility or organization in which at least 80% of front-facing staff are trained in autism and have met professional requirements. A CAC can be found in a number of industries, such as healthcare, education, or recreation, for example. The CAC does require training in autism, as well as other supports from IBCCES, and must be renewed periodically with ongoing training in order to be maintained. Some locations also complete an on-site review process and provide other accommodations for visitors.

Are there any discounts or scholarships offered?

IBCCES offers group discounts depending on the number of staff in need of certification through your group. We do not offer scholarships or free certifications at this time.

How are the training and certification programs created?

IBCCES training and certification programs reflect best practices not only from clinical and subject matter experts, but also include the lived experience of self-advocates and caregivers to achieve a well-rounded, multi-disciplinary approach. In addition, the IBCCES board represents this perspective with several autistic and disability self-advocates and family members, as well as experts in a variety of industries and clinical specialties. Our mission is to advocate for affirming and positive inclusion of neurodivergent individuals and individuals with disabilities in all aspects of society, including, but not limited to, education, healthcare, employment, and leisure.
