Before you dismiss it again, trace it back. Before you list the reasons it probably won’t work, before you bring up your age, your responsibilities, your money, your past, your lack of connections, or how many times life has already knocked you off course, ask yourself where you actually learned to think about your dream this way. Because that voice didn’t start with you. Somebody, taught you what was reasonable.

Nobody had to sit you down and tell you to stop dreaming. It was subtler than that. You watched the adults around you choose survival because survival was the only thing they had time for.

I remember hearing versions of it myself: dreams are for when you’re asleep, right now you need to get to work, ain’t nobody got time to dream.

You heard people talk about money like there would never be enough of it.

You watched people stay in jobs they hated because the benefits were good — I did exactly that, stayed at a corporate job I despised, partly for the insurance and partly because failing scared me more than staying did.

You saw people postpone themselves year after year because somebody always needed them more than they needed themselves.

Be realistic.

Get something secure.

That’s too risky.

People like us don’t do things like that.

You have responsibilities.

You’re too old to start over — that one’s my personal favorite.

What if you fail?

Hear enough versions of that and something strange happens: nobody has to say it anymore, because you’ve started saying it to yourself. You get an idea and immediately explain why it can’t work. You get excited and then feel embarrassed for being excited. You picture yourself doing the thing you actually want to do, and before the image even settles, another thought shows up to put you back in your place.

Who do you think you are?

Maybe that’s the real question underneath all of it.

At some point in our lives, a lot of us learned that believing in ourselves was something we had to justify. We could believe in everybody else. Encourage our children. Support our friends. Tell another woman she deserves more. See possibility all over everyone else’s life and then turn around and treat our own like foolishness. That deserves a second look.

allowed to need more space now, to change your mind mid-sentence, to protect your mornings, to leave a conversation early, and to say no without writing a five-paragraph defense of your character.

Then comes the part you can’t really prepare for: growth will make you inconvenient to the people who benefited from your wounds.

When you were operating from guilt, fear, abandonment, people-pleasing, or the need to be needed, you were predictable. Folks knew exactly which button to push. They knew you would call back eventually because they knew you would feel guilty if you didn’t. They knew that if they sounded disappointed enough, you’d cave. You always do. They knew you’d swallow what bothered you rather than “make things weird.” They knew you’d carry more than your share and then insist you were fine.

Fuck that! Not anymore.

So naturally, somebody has something to say about it.

You’ve changed. You’re distant. You think you’re better than everybody. You’re not as available. You’re being selfish. You’re acting funny.

Because you spent years reading rooms and tracking other people’s moods, those accusations can still pluck a nerve. They can make you want to explain yourself.

My bad, that’s not what I meant. I’m just trying to work on myself. I still love you. I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings.

And there you go again, apologizing for your own transformation.

Girl, put the apology down.

href="https://youtu.be/Chqa0sEGHhs?is=deDMBlL0OdB3Qw5_">healing your visibility wound. Thing is, I didn’t go into my own story in it, so I want to do that here.

For me, healing my visibility wound was not easy, it didn’t happen overnight, as a matter of fact it took decades. Yes chile, decades.

The process of healing your visibility wound might sound simple packed into an eighteen minute video, but even now, today, I still have to consciously remind myself of who I am. A woman free to be who the fuck she wants to be. I can not, and will not, be controlled.

I grew up the eldest daughter. Took care of my younger brother. Raised him, raised us really. If you’re an eldest daughter, you already know what it is.

Share

If you’re not, here’s what people don’t understand: eldest daughters get handed a job they never signed up for, and they get handed it early. You become the built-in mother to your siblings, a second parent to your own parent(s), the housekeeper, the cook, the psychologist. And somewhere in doing all of that, you don’t get a childhood of your own.

This is your childhood.

You do as you’re told and you accept the role because you believe that’s just how it’s supposed to be.

I was 22 years old when my mother came home from work and blamed me for something my brother didn’t do.

She’d given him a chore that morning and as per usual he didn’t do it. Instead he decided to go galavanting around town with his friends. Classic high school kid stuff.

I was at work all day and had nothing to do with the situation. I didn’t even know she’d asked him to do anything,

But when she got home at the end of the day and it still wasn’t done, she turned it on me.

Told me I should’ve been paying attention to what he was doing.

“Where is your son?” huh

That’s what she said. Your son.

She caught herself half a second later and switched it up, “where is your brother”, but it was too late.

I heard the first version.

And when I told her I had no idea what she was talking about, that set her off. She slapped me. I grabbed her hand, pushed it away, we argued for a few seconds, and then it was over. Like it had never happened.

But I couldn’t let it go, because I’d been raising my brother since I was 10. And in one triggering slipped word, my mother told me exactly how she saw me.

Not as her daughter.

But as his mother.

She said a whole lot without saying that much.

People hear “visibility wound” and may picture invisible, like nobody ever looked at you. That’s not what completely happened to me. My mother looked right at me. She just didn’t see me.

She saw the role, the built-in babysitter, the housekeeper, the on-call psychologist for a household that needed managing. She saw a function.

I wanted her to see me, her daughter.

When you’re invisible, at least nobody’s looking, this was being looked at every single day and still not being known.

And what people don’t realize is that this role doesn’t only damage a child when she’s young. She carries it into adulthood and it ruins her relationships, self esteem , ability to trust people, hell, to trust herself, her boundaries, sense of identity outside of taking care of everyone, her capacity to rest without guilt, and her ability to receive help instead of always giving it.

And when I say seen, I don’t mean loud, obnoxious or jumping up and down for attention. For me, being seen means feeling safe enough to speak up and be heard without having to brace myself for what happens after. Being me, unconditionally, without editing myself down first. Wearing my hair the way it actually grows out of my head without somebody turning it into a joke. Telling my story without wondering if people will like me less for it. Talking about how I feel without waiting for the punchline.

I found that out the hard way when I worked in corporate. I cut my hair and went natural. I thought the people I worked with, the ones I considered work family, would be in my corner. Instead, they clowned me. The people I expected to cheer me on were the ones laughing.

That’s a different kind of hurt than a stranger doing it. A stranger doesn’t know you. These were people I trusted. And it confirmed the thing I already believed deep down, that even my own people weren’t a safe place to just be myself.

For most of my adult life, whenever I suppressed myself, swallowed what I actually wanted to say, shrunk down to keep the peace, I felt like I was standing on the outside looking in at my own life.

That version of me on the outside, would watch me do it over and over again and shake her head and be like… Girl, you did it again. Why didn’t you say something? You should’ve said... next time, do... girl, you know you deserve better than that... don’t let that mutha fucker get away with that... You need to believe in yourself and trust your intuition. (this one right here was always tapping on my shoulder)

Well, I started listening to her in small doses and making tiny adjustments. Unfortunately, more times that I care to admit, I reverted back to the old behavior. That was the pattern for years, like taking two steps toward myself and one step back into hiding.

But here’s what finally broke it for good.

March 2024, my grandmother passed away. Instead of allowing myself to grieve her, I spent that time “managing” my mother’s emotions. She’s always had a turbulent relationship with her mother, so me and my brother call ourselves preparing for how she’d react when she passes. We started having this conversation at least a year prior. That’s how deep this runs. It’s so deep I can’t put it in this essay.

I remember being at my grandmother’s memorial, sitting on pins and needles, waiting for the shoe to drop, exhausted, rubbing my head, and neck trying to release tension, anger and anticipation. The weight was so heavy it literally sat in my body like i was carrying a sack of boulders on my back.

Six weeks later, April 20th, 2024, my daughter called 911. They rushed me to the hospital. I’d suffered a brain bleed.

I was told it was a chaotic day to put it mildly, the kind where the details still shake me when my dad tells the story. If they’d transferred me to the hospital they’d originally planned to, I wouldn’t have made it. If they’d waited another thirty minutes, same outcome. My dad says the surgeon just appeared, out of nowhere, right when the doctor he’d been talking to said there wasn’t a surgeon available in the building. By the grace of God, that doctor showed up in time to operate.

I woke up in the ICU after the surgery feeling blessed with uncertainty if that makes sense. A few days there, a few more in a regular hospital room, then a rehab facility for 3 weeks. And in between the family visits and the doctors and the nurses, I finally had time to just sit and think. To exhale for the first time in decades…. exhale…I was so tired.

How the fuck did I get here?

Every suppressed moment of my life came rushing through me at once, and lying in that hospital bed, I made a decision: I am no longer going to be invisible.

That was the most pivotal moment of my life, not the hospital itself, but the conversations I had with God while I was in it. I promised myself that when I got out, I was going to start living the way I was actually meant to live.

God put more in me than I’d been letting myself have. And getting visible didn’t start with other people. Other people are secondary. It starts with you seeing yourself. If you’re not comfortable seeing who you really are, nobody else is ever going to be comfortable seeing it either.

So I made the decision, right there. No more managing other people’s emotions. No more managing other people’s chaos. No more fighting battles that are not mine to fight. No more suppressing what I think and feel. No more giving everybody else more of me than I give myself. No more feeling guilty for resting. No more feeling unworthy for wanting anything. I was 48 years old, and this was a complete shift in how I was raised and how I had been living my life in every way imaginable.

And honestly, I didn’t have much of a choice in the matter. I was recovering from brain surgery. Brain Surgery! I physically didn’t have the capacity to carry anyone else’s mess anymore anyway, so the adjustment wasn’t optional, it was survival. Saying it is one thing. Living it is another, especially when managing everyone else is the only pattern you’ve ever known. But I was forced to stop, and looking back, that’s the best thing that ever happened to me. I should never have been carrying it in the first place.

Admittedly, this took about two weeks to write. Partially because some of the memories are difficult to talk about, but also because getting visible is genuinely one of the hardest things people like us do. It’s easier to stay invisible. There are a hundred reasons to. But getting visible means unlearning everything you were taught, everything you were basically brainwashed into believing about your own worth. It means getting out of your comfort zone. It means doing the shadow work. It means changing the parts of yourself you don’t want to change, even when you know you have to.

I wanted to change all of it. I just didn’t know how, not at first.

There are still little glitches, where somebody says something or does something that triggers me and I catch that old pull to disappear again. But now I pause. I don’t reply right away. I sit with what I’m feeling until I’ve got my thoughts together, and then I respond, instead of swallowing it like I used to. I journal when I need to release something, not on a schedule, just whenever it hits. No more suppressing. That’s the whole practice now.

I’m not writing this because it was easy to heal. I’m writing this because it wasn’t, and I did it anyway. And if you’re still on the outside looking in at your own life, you can too, because I know I'm worthy of healing, and so are you."

Stay soft. Stay clear. You’ve got a scoreboard running in your head, and that thing does not sleep.

It clocks her house, her body, her calm, her marriage, the way she seems to float through life like nothing costs her anything and it clocks you right alongside her, every single time.

Nobody sat you down and taught you the rules. You just picked it up somewhere along the way, and you’ve been keeping score since you were a little girl.

Never once stopped to ask yourself the one question that actually matters: what happens if I put this down?

So let’s ask it right now, before we go any further. What would actually happen if you stopped ranking yourself against her?

Here’s What the Scoreboard Actually Tracks

Let’s just say it plain, because you already know: you’re not comparing one thing. You’re running a whole audit from the rooda to the tooda …

her house against your house, her body against your body, her “she makes it look easy” against every single thing you’ve had to fight for, on a woman who doesn’t even know she’s being measured.

And that scoreboard never closes out. No final buzzer and no season that ends. You’re carrying this running tally into every room, every scroll, every family function, doing math before you’ve even said hello.

You've been so busy keeping score that you forgot to ask who wrote the dag on rules.

Subscribe now

Rock with these for a second. No performing, just be honest with yourself:

	•	When’s the last time you saw a woman winning and felt nothing but joy for her? No math running underneath it. Just straight up joy?

	•	How much of your actual day, your real, limited hours is going toward arithmetic nobody asked you to do?

	•	If she disappeared off your radar tomorrow, no more posts, no more updates, nothing left to measure would you actually feel free? Or would you just go find somebody else to measure yourself against?

It’s not really about her sis.

The Scoreboard Was Never About Her

She’s not the point. She’s just the mirror you’re using to check yourself in. The scoreboard isn’t measuring her against you, it’s measuring you against some standard you never even wrote down and can’t fully name. So you borrow her as the ruler.

Ahead of her, oh, you’re good.

Behind her, you’re failing.

Either way, you’ve handed the verdict on your own life to a woman who never signed up to hold it.

Ask yourself, real honest: whose voice is actually running this math? Is it really about her or is it the same voice that’s never once believed you were enough on your own, with nothing to measure yourself against?

That voice didn’t just show up from nowhere. Somebody, somewhere, taught you your worth needed a comparison to be real. And you’ve been paying that bill every time you open her page.

Pause for a second and feel what your body’s doing right now, reading this.

Tight somewhere low in your stomach? Breath gone a little shallow without you asking it to? That’s not nothing, that’s your body bracing for a verdict before it’s even come in. It’s been running that program so long you probably stopped clocking it as a choice.

	1.	Next time you catch yourself mid-comparison, stop and say it out loud, even just under your breath: “I’m keeping score again.”

	2.	Put a hand somewhere on your body…chest, stomach, wherever the bracing’s at and just notice it. Don’t fix it yet. Just notice.

	3.	Ask yourself one real question: what am I actually trying to find out about myself right now?

	4.	Answer it yourself, straight up… not through her. “Am I proud of how I’m spending my time?” gets answered by you, not by her calendar.

	5.	Let the scoreboard close out. You don’t have to win it or lose it. Just stop opening the app.

And listen, if you’re doing this because some part of you doesn’t trust that you’re enough without the comparison, without proof you’re ahead of somebody, that’s not who you are. That’s a self-abandonment habit wearing a productivity costume, and it’s the exact pattern Stop People Pleasing: Reclaim Your Time. Your Boundaries. Choose Yourself. was built to interrupt. Get the workbook here.

What Actually Changes When You Put the Scoreboard Down

Not much changes about her, sis. She keeps posting. She keeps living her life, mostly not even knowing she was ever your measuring stick. What changes is everything you get back.

Picture her for a second, the version of you that walks into a room and doesn’t do inventory. Sees another woman thriving and just feels glad, all the way through, no asterisk attached. Can you see her? What’s that feel like in your chest? Lighter? A little unfamiliar? Maybe a little bit like grief for all the years you weren’t her yet.

The woman who isn't keeping score has more room in her for everything else.

That’s the trade nobody tells you about. The scoreboard felt like vigilance, like staying sharp, like protecting yourself from falling behind. It was never that. It was just an expensive way of never fully arriving anywhere, ’because you were always half-checking the standings instead of living your actual life.

So ask yourself, one last time, for real: are you ready to stop keeping score?

Nobody’s handing you a trophy for winning a game you were never required to play. And the woman on the other end of your comparisons was never your opponent. She was just over there, living her life, while you turned her into a ruler.

Put the ruler down, girl. Go see how much of your own life you actually got room for.

Stay soft. Stay clear. It worked, this week alone, on a coworker who kept restating my own idea back to me like he’d invented it. It worked on a friend who canceled on me for the third time and apologized a little less each time. It worked on a version of myself standing in front of the mirror at 11pm, wondering why my hands were still clenched from a conversation that had ended hours earlier.

Tired covered all of it. Tired is patient like that. It never asks a single follow-up question.

Here’s what tired never had to explain: none of those moments needed sleep. Not one of them would have been solved by a nap, an early bedtime, or any of the things “tired” is supposed to fix. What they needed was for me to say, out loud, that I was angry, and I didn’t, because angry doesn’t get nodded along to the way tired does. Angry gets questioned. Tired just gets sympathy.

“Tired” Is the Answer Nobody Questions

She’d noticed something - that I would hold my breath during certain situations. When I was pondering something. When there was something wrong, or I even just thought something was wrong. And this wasn’t a childhood thing I grew out of. This was my reaction well into my 40s.

Looking back, that’s about the only time anyone in that house named what was actually happening in me. Everywhere else, I was the one doing the naming. I was mothering my little brother while I was still a kid myself. And I was mothering her too — not just as a kid, but straight through my adulthood. There wasn’t a lot of room left over to ask what I needed.

Of course, I never noticed any of it while it was happening. Not the breath-holding, not the role, none of it. You don’t see the shape of the thing when you’re the one holding it up.

The Anxiety Underneath It

Taking those deep breaths is so calming to me now. But the anxiety of what if had always plagued me. Always waiting for something bad to happen. And already, in the same breath, working out how I was going to fix it when it did because fixing things was the job. It had been the job for a long time.

I learned early that feelings were something you managed for other people. Not something you got to have yourself.

All of that — the waiting, the bracing, the fixing-it-in-advance, was wrapped up in those seconds of holding my breath. It wasn’t just a physical thing I did. It was internal. I was suppressing my voice. I was suppressing my feelings. And doing that for decades is what led to my health crisis.

I tell this story, or rather share this memory, to help others stop suppressing their voice.

I don’t know if she ever learned to breathe through hers. I just know she kept moving. That’s a pattern too, whether anyone names it or not.

Then Came 2020

In 2020, I finally took the yoga and meditation course I’d been wanting to take for a while. At first, I thought I wanted to teach it. Get certified, build something out of it, offer it to other people.

Shortly afterward, I realized that wasn’t it at all. I didn’t want to teach it. I had wanted to learn it for me. To help me.

And it did.

Admittedly, it didn’t kick in immediately, because I was still in fight-or-flight mode. Still in that rushing state I’d been living in for years. But as time went on, it sank in. It actually sank in.

When the Health Scare Came

When the health scare came, I had and still have that practice to help me through the healing process.

Somatic note: Holding your breath under stress isn’t just a nervous habit — it’s a real freeze response. When something doesn’t feel safe to say or feel, the body can default to stillness and shallow, held breath as a form of protection. Mine ran quietly in the background for over forty years before I ever noticed it.

By the time the health scare arrived, that pattern was decades deep. But I finally had tools to interrupt it and they are the same tools I still use every morning.

The Practice: Box Breathing

The breathing I typically do in the morning is box breathing. Simple, four equal parts, easy to come back to even when your mind is somewhere else entirely.

Box Breathing

Inhale through your nose for 4 counts

Hold at the top for 4 counts

Exhale for 4 counts

Hold at the bottom, empty, for 4 counts

Repeat for several rounds. That’s the whole practice. No app, no special posture. Just four counts and your own breath, on repeat, until your body gets the message that it’s safe to come down.

But the breathing was never really the point. It’s just the door back in.

Where People-Pleasing Was Hiding in All of This

Suppressing my voice. Suppressing my feelings. Not saying the thing, not naming what was wrong, not letting myself feel it all the way through, that’s not just a breathing pattern. That’s people-pleasing, wearing a different coat. It’s what happens when you’re handed the job of keeping everyone else steady before anyone bothers to ask if you’re steady yourself.

If that’s landing a little too close, that’s exactly what Stop People Pleasing: Reclaim Your Time. Your Boundaries. Choose Yourself. was written for. Get the workbook here.

What I Actually Want You to Know

You deserve to be heard. You deserve to be seen. Your words deserve to be felt, not held back, not managed, not swallowed to keep somebody else comfortable.

"My mother said it before I understood what I was actually holding, or where I'd learned to hold it."

I’m finally listening.

Stay soft. Stay clear. Stay yours.

Thanks for reading Come home to yourself! Small. Genuinely small, yes. And I stood at that stove with my jaw locked and my hands shaking, furious AF in a way that felt three sizes too big for a pot of rice. The anger had shown up dressed as a reaction to rice, but it had walked in from somewhere much older. Somewhere with a different kitchen, a different pot, a different woman standing at a stove being furious and having nowhere to put it.

The Anger You’re Feeling Right Now Might Not Be From Right Now

Here’s the thing nobody tells you about anger:

It’s still one of the hardest muscles you’ll ever build.

THE SKILL NOBODY TAUGHT YOU

I sat in my car outside my mother’s house for eleven minutes before I sent the text. Not sick. Not stuck in traffic. Just done, the specific kind of done where walking through that door would cost more than staying home, and I already knew it. My thumb hovered over send like it was a loaded gun. Not because I doubted my own words. Because I already knew exactly what her face was going to do when she read them.

That’s the part nobody warns you about. It’s not disappointing someone that gets you. It’s watching yourself do it on purpose, in real time, and staying in your body while it happens.

There's an old clip of Viola Davis that's made its way around the internet and stuck with me ever since. It's been re-shared and paraphrased a hundred different ways, but the gist always lands the same: it is not selfish to let someone be disappointed if the alternative is abandoning yourself. Never be afraid of letting someone down if the trade is finally showing up for you.

Read that again. Slow. Because most of us were not raised on that sentence. We were raised on the opposite one, unspoken but airtight: someone else’s face falling is always, always yours to fix.

The Sentence Nobody Taught You to Say

If you grew up reading rooms for a living, watching a jaw tighten, a silence stretch a half-second too long, a “no worries” that clearly came with worries then you already know disappointment was never allowed to just exist in your house. It had to be managed. Absorbed. Apologized out of the air before it finished landing.

So you got good at it. Not lying, exactly, just pre-emptive smoothing. Saying yes before you’d finished deciding. Softening a “no” until it wasn’t a no anymore, just a delay. You became fluent in everyone’s disappointment except your own, because your own was the one nobody ever asked about.

Here’s the sentence you were never handed: their disappointment is allowed to happen, and it is not evidence that you did something wrong.

Disappointment Is Not an Emergency

Somebody not getting what they wanted from you is not the same as somebody being harmed by you. Those two things got fused together somewhere back in childhood, and your nervous system has been treating them as identical ever since which is why declining a plan can produce the same chest-tightening, stomach-dropping alarm as actual danger.

Somebody else’s disappointment is not a five-alarm fire. It’s weather. It moves through them and it does not have to move through you.

Somatic Insight

Notice what happens in your body the next time you’re about to disappoint someone. The tight chest. The urge to over-explain. The rehearsed apology forming before you’ve even said the actual thing. That feeling is not proof you’re doing something wrong beloved that’s cortisol. That’s old wiring firing on schedule. You can feel it and still send the text.

Disappointing Someone Is Not the Same as Hurting Them

This is the distinction that gets muddied every single time: a boundary that disappoints someone is not cruelty. Cancelling a plan, saying no to a request, choosing rest over being available — none of that is harm. It’s just a limit. Harm has intent behind it, or damage in its wake. A disappointed person is inconvenienced. A harmed person is injured. Conflating the two is exactly how you end up apologizing for things that never needed an apology in the first place.

If you’ve spent years treating every disappointed face like a crime scene you caused, this is the recalibration: most of the time, you didn’t do anything wrong. You just stopped doing something for free.

That reflex - the compulsion to prevent disappointment at any cost, even your own cost — has a name, and it’s the whole reason people-pleasing exists as a pattern instead of just a personality quirk.

This Is a Rep, Not a Personality Trait

Nobody wakes up one day suddenly unbothered by other people’s reactions. That’s not how it works, and if someone’s selling you that story, they’re selling you a fantasy. What actually happens is smaller and slower: you disappoint someone in a low-stakes situation, you survive it, your body logs the data — I did the uncomfortable thing and the world did not end — and next time the alarm goes off a little quieter.

That’s it. That’s the whole mechanism. Repetition, not revelation.

THE ONE DISAPPOINTMENT A WEEK PRACTICE

Pick one low-stakes moment this week — a group text, a coworker’s ask, a family expectation — and let someone be disappointed on purpose.

Don’t over-explain. One clear sentence, no essay of justification trailing behind it.

Notice you survived it. Write down what actually happened afterward, not what you feared would happen. Let the gap between those two things do the convincing.

What Opens Up When You Stop Managing Everyone’s Face

The people who only loved the version of you that never let them down were never loving you. They were loving your compliance, and those are not the same relationship. The ones who stick around after you start disappointing them on purpose — those are the ones worth keeping. Everyone else was just enjoying the service.

The people who only loved the version of you that never let them down were never loving you. They were loving your compliance.

And here’s what nobody tells you about the other side of this: it’s hella quieter over there. Less performing. Less pre-gaming every conversation for how to land it softly. You get your actual bandwidth back — the energy that used to go toward managing everyone else’s face now just belongs to you.

Letting someone be disappointed in you is not the damage. It is the proof that you finally have a self worth protecting. You do not owe anyone a version of you that never costs them anything. That version was never sustainable, and it was never actually you.

Stay soft. Stay clear. Stay yours.

You Already Know What to Do. actually sit down and do. Grab it here and keep it handy, or read first and come back for it at the end, dealer's choice.

Think about a stranger you’ll never see again. Not somebody important, just a person you stood next to in a line once, years back, for maybe ninety seconds. There’s a good chance you remember something about them. A laugh. A jacket. The weird specific way they said “have a good one” to the cashier. Meanwhile, you could not tell me, under oath, what you wore to your own graduation.

That’s not a glitch. That’s the job. Your memory has been pulling this move your whole life, and it’s been trying to tell you something the rest of the world keeps shouting over.

Because at some point, somebody handed you a ranking of your own life. You didn’t ask for it. But you’ve been carrying it around for years anyway, this quiet little scoreboard that says the wedding counts and the Tuesday doesn’t, the graduation is real and the bus ride home isn’t, the big stuff is the main event and everything in between is just the hallway you walk down to get to it.

Here’s the thing nobody mentions. Your memory never signed off on that scoreboard. It’s been quietly keeping its own books this whole time, and its books look nothing like yours.

Because most of us were raised to treat fear like gospel. Chest tight? Don’t do it. Hands shaking? That’s your sign. Stomach in knots? God’s telling you to stay put. And look, sometimes that’s true — sometimes fear is your body doing exactly what it’s supposed to do, throwing up a flare because something is genuinely about to hurt you. But somewhere along the way we stopped asking the follow-up question. We just started treating every single flutter in our chest like it was a red light, when half the time it was just your nervous system trying to keep up with how fast you were growing.

Here’s what nobody told me: fear and growth feel identical in the body. Same racing heart. Same shallow breath. Same voice in your head whispering “girl, you sure about this?” Your body doesn’t have a separate alarm system for “this will destroy you” versus “this will change you.” It’s the same wiring. Which means you cannot outsource this decision to your physical sensations alone. You have to actually think. You have to actually discern. And I know discernment isn’t as sexy as “trust your gut,” but your gut doesn’t know the difference between a burning building and a doorway you’ve just never walked through before.

Subscribe

So how do you tell the difference? I’m not going to pretend it’s a formula, because it’s not — this isn’t a five-step checklist I’m handing you so you can outsource your intuition to a listicle. But I will tell you what I’ve learned, mostly the hard way and after ignoring my own advice more times than I want to admit. But I digress.

Warning-fear shrinks you. It makes the world smaller. It says don’t speak, don’t leave, don’t ask, don’t try, because something bad is coming and your only job is to avoid it. That fear is about protection. It’s old. It’s usually inherited — from a mama who was scared for you, from a church that was scared of you, from an experience that taught your body a lesson it never unlearned. Warning-fear is backward-facing. It’s always pointing at something that already happened to you or to somebody you love, and it’s trying to keep that thing from happening again.

Growth-fear is different, even though it borrows the same physical symptoms. Growth-fear is forward-facing. It’s not protecting you from a repeat of the past — it’s terrified of a future it’s never seen before, which is a completely different animal. Growth-fear shows up right before you say something true instead of something safe. Right before you leave a room you’ve outgrown. Right before you write the essay, make the call, end the relationship, start the business, ask God for the thing you actually want instead of the thing you learned to settle for. Growth-fear doesn’t shrink the world. It expands it, and that expansion is exactly what makes it terrifying. You’re not scared because you’re in danger. You’re scared because you’re standing at the edge of a version of yourself you haven’t met yet, and unmet things are always a little bit frightening, even when they’re good.

That’s the door. The thing that scares you and calls you in the same breath — that’s not a contradiction, that’s the actual definition of the door. If it only scared you, you’d run, simple as that. If it only called you, you’d have walked through already, no hesitation. It’s the both/and that confuses people. They think fear and desire canceling each other out means “wait.” Nah. Sometimes fear and desire showing up together at full volume means you’re finally standing somewhere real.

I’m not telling you to walk through every door that scares you, that’s not wisdom, that’s recklessness. I’m telling you to stop treating fear as the final word. Ask it a question first. Is this protecting me or is this just uncomfortable because it’s new? Is this warning me away from harm, or is this just my body catching up to a decision my spirit already made? Because I promise you, some of the scariest rooms of my life were also the rooms where I became somebody I actually like. And some of the safest feeling choices I ever made were slow, quiet deaths I didn’t recognize until years later.

You already know which door you’ve been standing in front of. You’ve known for a while, if we’re honest. The only thing left to figure out is whether that trembling in your chest is trying to save your life, or whether it’s just the sound your body makes right before you finally start living it.

Walk through it.

Share

Subscribe
