We are proud to share that Langham Hospitality Group (LHG) has partnered with A Plastic Ocean Foundation and Lingnan University’s Science Unit to launch an eco-innovation challenge that aims to revolutionise waste management in the hospitality industry. Exploring the diverse operational practices of hotels and the limitations of a “one-size-fits-all” approach, the initiative will develop tailored, science-based waste management strategies. Open to all Hong Kong full-time university undergraduate students and members of the public, the project will begin with a three-month waste audit at LHG’s Cordis, Hong Kong and Eaton HK, followed by a six-month open innovation competition supported by expert-led workshops. Winning ideas will be piloted at the two hotels and, if successful, rolled out across LHG’s global portfolio. The resulting findings will be published in a white paper, providing actionable blueprints for hotels worldwide. “With a commitment to halve our landfill waste intensity by 2030 compared to 2019 levels, we are actively reassessing how our hotels approach waste management,” says LHG CEO Bob van den Oord. “This partnership isn’t just about improving our operations—it’s about leading systemic change for the entire industry.” Underlining LHG’s commitment to sustainability, this partnership sets a new benchmark for accountable, scalable action. #LHGLife #Sustainability

The Langham Leadership Trainee Programme was designed to provide the best young talent with a diverse range of learning opportunities to forge a successful career path, and the story of Kristal Mak at The Langham, Hong Kong is a perfect example of the initiative’s positive impact. Kristal started her journey with Langham Hospitality Group as a Langham Leadership Trainee – Rooms at The Langham, Hong Kong in 2023. Over the next 18 months, Kristal gained operational experience of the front office, concierge and housekeeping departments while receiving consistent mentorship from hotel executives, and completed a two-week placement at The Langham, Melbourne. After finishing the programme in January 2025, Kristal was promoted to Assistant Manager of Front Desk at The Langham, Hong Kong. “The Langham Leadership Programme has been truly rewarding to me and developed me with an exciting and fulfilling journey at The Langham, Hong Kong,” says Kristal. Recalling the most memorable experiences, she highlights the time when she learned “how to turn oops to wow” by stepping in to help guests who had a birthday dinner booked on the wrong date, securing them a table at short notice and thus saving their special occasion. This is just one example of Kristal’s commitment to excellence, which has been fostered and honed by the Langham Leadership Trainee Programme. #LHGLife #YourStoryOurLegacy Sherona Shng Louis Jin, MBA Mike Fong
