    I once heard a talk of the last prime minister of the GDR, and he noted, that from our modern perspective and with hindsight, it is astonishing that the transition in the GDR was peaceful. The only forces with clear orders to maintain peace were the Soviet troops in East Germany, they remained in their barracks and order to use force only when being attacked. All East German forces (military, state police, secret police) had no orders to that effect. Commented Mar 7, 2019 at 12:21

    Without support from the Soviets, in a disastrous economic situation with high debt, and 80-90% of the population against them, I guess that many understood that is better to go than to fight. Commented Sep 20, 2024 at 12:02
