3Note also that the route taken was specifically chosen to take advantage of the fog at those latitudes at that time of year. The much more southerly route to Panama would not have given them that additional cover.user18963– user189632017-11-21 22:44:23 +00:00Commented Nov 21, 2017 at 22:44

1In re-reading, an additional point comes to mind. The U.S. had good information on when the fleet carriers arrived in and departed port in Japan. Disappearing completely for a period > 3 or 4 weeks really narrows the possible targets, because very little of strategic importance is that far from Japan.Pieter Geerkens– Pieter Geerkens2017-12-22 15:31:42 +00:00Commented Dec 22, 2017 at 15:31

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. world-war-two), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
